Chapter 2 - Vacation House

"Woooooow!" My little sister exclaimed the moment we entered our vacation house. It's been a while since nakapunta kami dito. Last time was 3 years ago to celebrate mommy and daddy's 21st wedding anniversary. Two years old palang si Tali noon so she probably don't remember anything.

Inilapag ko yung suitcase na dala ko sa lapag. It really is nice to be back here.

"It's so beautiful!" Ani Tali at inikot ang tingin sa buong silid. "But it's so maliit, momsie." She tilted her head. "This is not our house."

"That's because it's our vacation house, Tali bear." Ngiti ko sakanya and placed my hand over her shoulder. "It's not as big as our villa back in Cavite but it's nice, right?" Tali grinned back at me and nodded. "Yes, Ate Tash! You're right! It's so nice here!" Ani nya at nagtatakbo. Napangiti nalang ako as I watched her explore the house.

"Mommy, kailan dadating si Kuya Nate?" I said at naupo sa harap nung kitchen isle kaharap si mommy at Nanay Fe. Nanay Fe is the head maid ng tahanan namin. Not only that, sya rin ang nagalaga saamin ni Kuya Nate nung bata pa kami. She's currently working on Tali. She's like a part of the family now. Her mother also worked for my grandma before. Just like any other Christmases, Nanay Fe is going to spend her Christmas with us this year too!

"Finally! Uuwi rin si Nathaniel." Nanay Fe sighed in relief habang inaayos yung ref namin. "I know, Nanay! I'm so excited!" I grinned sheepishly. Nanay gave me a bowl of apples and oranges. Apples with no skin, of course. Alam nyang ayaw ko sa balat ng apple.

"They'll be here tomorrow." Mom smiled habang inilalagay yung mga cereal boxes sa may cupboard. Napalingon ako kay mommy with a piece of an apple in my mouth.

"Waf?" Confused kong tanong. Mommy walked over to grab the box of cookies na nasa shopping bag sa harapan ko. "Don't talk when your mouth is full." Paalala nya and touched my chin to make me chew the apple in my mouth.

Mabilis ko itong nginuya.

"Mommy, what do you mean by that?"
"By what, darling?"
"That."

"Anak, ano ba? I can't understand you." Confused rin na sabi ni mommy. "By what you said, mommy! What do you mean they?" Napatigil si mommy and gradually smiled meaningfully at me.

"You'll see." Ngiti nito. It fueled my curiosity at halos hindi ako mapakali. Not until I get to know what she meant by that.

"Maguuwi ba si Kuya ng friend nya? That's unfair, mommy! Bakit si Charm at Sab, hindi mo hinayaang sumama dito?" I pouted. Kuya Nate gets to bring home a friend and I didn't?

"Believe me, anak. This is more than just a friend! Your Kuya Nate is bringing home his girlfriend!" Nanlaki ang mga mata ko.

"Dyos ko, madam! Totoo ba itong sinasabi mo?" Ani Nanay Fe. "Yes, Nanay! I wanted this to be a very special Christmas since finally, maguuwi na si Nate ng girlfriend!"

"Dyos ko! Ang Nathaniel natin, binata na!" -Nanay

"Wait, may girlfriend si Kuya Nate?" Gulo kong sabi. That's weird... Wala naman syang namention saakin ah?

"Yes!" Mommy beamed and I pouted. Did my brother kept it a secret from me?

"Mommy, wala naman syang nasabi saakin na may girlfriend sya ah?" Mommy gave me a look. "Why? His love life is his private affair!"

"That's ironic, mom! Considering you're the one who's been pestering him and setting him up with some of your amigas' daughters!" I said in defense. Pareho lang naman kaming curious sa love life ni Kuya Nate. "Yea, but I'm not doing it now since he said he already have a girlfriend! If I knew, hindi ko sana sya pinilit na makipagdate sa mga anak ng mga business friends namin ng daddy mo!" Nakangiting sabi ni mommy. Kahit pa. I can't believe hindi nya manlang sinabi saakin. Sa sarili nyang kapatid?

"Wag ka nang malungkot, anak. Malay mo, gusto ka lang surpresahin ng iyong Kuya." Ngiti naman ni Nanay Fe and gave me a one arm hug. "Sige na nga po, Nanay Fe.." Ani ko naman at umalis na sa kusina bitbit yung bowl ng apples and oranges na hinanda ni Nanay saakin kanina.

Pumunta ako sa may living room at binuksan yung tv para manood sa Netflix. Sino kaya ang girlfriend ni Kuya Nathan? Where did they meet? How old is she? Maganda kaya sya? Gaano na sila katagal?

Alam ko naman na out of my business ang love life ng kapatid ko. Pero considering how close we are with each other, na-shocked paren ako dahil ngayon ko lang napagalaman. Eh miski nga yung breakfast ni Kuya ay pinipicturan pa nito at sinesend saakin sa Facebook eh. Whenever he travels overseas dahil sa work nya, he'll always take pictures and post it online. He'd tag me and put a caption like Wish you were here, Sissy! I miss you! o kaya naman Next time na magbakasyon ako, sasama kita dito, Tashi bear! Love you all so much! So why would he keep it from me? It's not like obligasyon nya mag report sakin about every single detail of his life pero him entering a relationship is pretty serious. I would like to get to know his girlfriend myself too since Kuya ko sya and I want to make sure na hindi paasa ang girlfriend nya or just wants him for his money katulad nung previous nyang girlfriend, si Angela.

"What are you watching, Ate Tash?" My thoughts were broken nung marinig kong bumulong si Tali. I turned around and our faces were literally inches apart. Tiningnan nya ako gamit yung malalaki at magagandang mga mata nya. Her eyes were the color of the sky. Isa ito sa mga namana nya sa mommy namin.

"Hey Tali." I smiled. "Hi." She giggled. "Can I watch with you?" Lumingon ako sa direksyon ng tv at napangiwi. I was watching a horror movie. Something not really appropriate for five year old kids.

Mabilis kong pinalitan ang pinapanood ko and played Ella Enchanted instead. Tali sat with me and we cuddled on the sofa. Halfway through the movie, Tali was already snoring in my arms. Tumingin ako sa labas. Gabi na pala.

"Girls, matulog na kayo." Paalala ni Nanay Fe saakin. "Alas nwebe na ng gabi."

"Yes, Nanay. Tulog na nga po si Tali." I smiled at her at inalis yung kumot na nakabalot sa amin ni Tali. "Ako na ang mag—"

"Oh, don't bother, Nay! Kaya ko na po." Binuhat ko na si Tali at tumayo na. "Goodnight Nanay." I kissed her on the cheek at naglakad na palayo. "Don't forget to say goodnight to your mother, dear." Ani Nanay Fe at pumunta na sa may laundry room para labahan yung mga covers ng mga kama na pinalitan namin kanina.

"I will!" I called back. Dumaan ako sa kwarto nila mommy para mag goodnight. Pagkatapos ay nagpunta na ako sa kwarto ni Tali.

"Tash.. Don't go.." She groaned, still asleep at niyakap ang braso ko the moment I laid her on her bed. "Tali.." I whispered. "Nuh-uh." She insisted at hinigpitan pa ang yakap saakin. Napangiti nalang ako. How could I say no to this little cutie right here?

In the end, I jumped on the bed too and cuddled my little sister under the covers. Bukas ang glass door nya that led to the veranda so the room was a bit chilly. Ipinikit ko ang mga mata ko and listened to the songs of the soft waves of the ocean. It was what lulled me to sleep that night.
