I was as usual early for class so I sat down on my place in the corner of the room after I removed a black bag and took out my laptop. I logged myself in the school's network (I had hacked it a few weeks after I came to this school, because those incompetent teachers were incredibly careful on giving the password to students) and started looking at the news. Nothing new. A few changes in the government, workers wanting more money, the usual.
''Smitham, you're sitting on my place'', a deep voice came from my favourite classmate. Please note the sarcasm. I bit my lip, trying to stop the comment from coming out of my mouth. I glared at him, trying to tell him that it wasn't his place. I sat there every day for the past years only today Mister Ferguson decided to put his bag on my chair.
''That's right. You move when someone tells you. You are the only girl in this class with no guts'', he said.
''Well, at least she ain't the only guy with no dick'', the only guy who detested Damian more than I did, said.
I smiled at Finn but he ignored me like he always did. Finn Touson was quite the interesting person, I had to admit. His black hair with blue highlights and his almost black eyes were mysterious in a way that I couldn't quite point my fingers at.
''Alright. Sit down everyone. Why are you giving him this look, Damian? If looks could kill'', Mr Johnson said. He was one of those teachers that tried way to hard to be cool but ended up being really sad. I heard that he even got a few students' numbers and regulary asked them how they were doing. Creepy.
''This are your new classmates. Regina Smollet and Brooks Sanders'', Mr introduced them. I looked at them. Both were rather short compared to Finn or Damian. The guy had short brown hair and the girl had light blonde, tied into two pigtails which slightly looked like the ears of a bunny. They had slim figures but also somehow muscular, like long -distance runners.
He raised his hand in a small wave while the girl just smiled kindly.
''Chose your seats'', the teacher said, meaning well but dooming the new students. Everyone knew that the seat you chose on your first day will define you for the rest of your time at that school.
They walked in my direction but I was sure that they would pass me and sit with the sports guys. So when the boy let himself drop onto the uncomfortable chair I looked at them in surprise.
''Is this seat taken?'', the girl asked and pointed at the chair next to me. I was so shocked so my only reaction was to stare at her with a blank expression.
''I take that as a no'', she said, chuckled slightly and sat down.
''Today we are going to talk about Lake Malawi. Can one of you tell me where it's located? What about you, Regina?'', the teacher asked.
''In the arctic?'', she asked. The class burst out into laughter and even I couldn't hold back a small giggle. She looked at us in confusion.
''Why was everyone laughing?'', she asked after the laughter had died down and the teacher continued to speak.
''It's location is literally in its name. Malawi'', the boy explained. ''Don't mind her, Geography is not her strongest subject'', Brooks explained to me. I smiled and nodded, trying to focus on the teacher and my notes.
They both concentrated on the lesson and afterwards I showed them the way to the english class room.
''Would you mind having lunch with us? Maybe you can show us around town a little?'', Brooks asked five minutes before school was over.
I cleared my throat. ''Not in this canteen. I'd die before I would eat here'', I told them. I could feel people's eyes on me. They weren't used to me speaking. At all. Neither was I, just for your information.
''Some small town-special restaurant you can recommend?'', Brooks asked, keeping the smile plastered on his face.
''The one from Finn's grandma has nice salads'', I said shortly, suddenly regaining my taciturness.
''Sure. I'd love to'', Regina said but I wasnt sure if I could believe her. She was walking next to Brooks, her books pressed against her chest.
''So were you born here?'', Brooks asked while looking at the road in front of him.
''Yeah. You?'', I kept my answers short. I wasn't sure if I could trust them. My instincts were telling me that there was something fishy in the air. I decided to just get to know them a little because instincts could be wrong, right?
''New Yorker original'', he said with a smile that looked like it was supposed to cover up something.
''I always wanted to go to New York. And New Orleans. And Miami'', I told him and remembered all the pictures I had looked at.
''New York is really...big. Miami is overrated. New Orleans is great. Honestly. The people are always there to help you and the town still looks like it did in the fiftees'', he said.
''Are you saying that you have been to all these places?'', I asked totally shocked.
''What can I say? Well my parents travel a lot'', he said but there was a small hesitation before he said the second sentence a little bit faster than he usually spoke.
We went into the restaurant called Pieces of Peace. I personally loved everything about that small café. The owner was one of the nicest old ladies you could possibly imagine and her and her husband were the best people at cooking I knew. My parents were more or less incompatible when it came to cooking. My dad once burned down half of the kitchen while making fried eggs (literally the easiest meal you could imagine. Even Marly could do that and she was seven).
''What do you guys want? The soups and the salads are the best. And the sandwiches. And everything, I guess?'', I blathered. For the first time in a few years I actually had something to say to anyone else than my family.
Brooks and Regina looked into the menu.
''The carrot salad sounds good'', Regina said.
''I think the soup with tomatoes, carrots and a piece of brown bread is nice'', Brooks said and put down the menu. We ordered and after I got my mozzarella and pasta salad, the three of us did a little smalltalk. I found out that Brooks was actually really clever and he had gotten prizes for mathematics and english.
''I need to do some homework...do you guys mind?'', I asked them, trying to be polite. I usually stayed at the small café after school and did my homework or read a book if I only had school until lunch and waited for my siblings to get home.
''Not at all. I took a book with me to read since I finished the homework in class earlier when we were discussing I'll just read a little'', Brooks said and pulled out a thick book while I looked for my math exercise book. Brooks leaned the book on the edge of the table and I was able to read the title.
''How to handle psychological disorders? Well that is one interesting book title'', I laughed. Yes, I actually laughed. I could feel Selena, Finn's grandmother, smiling at me. She probably thought that I had finally overcome my anxiety. In a way, these two had made me want to talk. I never had anything to tell anyone, and even if I had, I would push it down, but Regina and Brooks somehow made me open my mouth.
