Birds of Happiness

They left on a sunny September afternoon.

Like the sky setting on twilight, my life only got darker.

They left on a sunny September afternoon but with them, they took the sun.

It rained for the next week, turning my sadness into muddy puddles.

Puddles that I could swim in, drown.

The weather got colder and my eyes redder.

Alone I was lost.

Frost bit at my heart.

Warm twinkling lights in the windows,

But I preferred the stars.

Outside with the wind

And chaos of the cosmos.

I let the cold in,

From my fingertips to my bones.

As I looked into the eyes of the universe

I felt so small, and oh so cold.

So the stars came down to join me.

Enveloping me in their warm light,

Like birds nestling in my heart.
