It all started when I was a young parallelogram just starting my sophomore year of high school. In the world back then only parallelograms were the acceptable shapes and the others were either executed or banished to the forbidden lands.

Your shape was determined after you go through shape puberty which begins when you turn 14 and ends when you turn 18, during this time you would begin to transform into the shape that you are meant to be. However; if you choose, at 16 you may be able to take a "specialized" personality test that allows you to see what you "will" be. Once the results from the test come back you will then be able to have shape surgery to become your "true" self.

I was turning 16 soon and the pressure from my parents to take the test was getting to me but I was hopeful that maybe this new school year would be better.

I walked through those same red double doors that I had been through so many times before but seeing as how I was no longer a freshman this somehow made it different.
I had walked around the school for awhile seeing some new faces and some old ones, I also saw how a lot of my fellow classmates had already found their shape.

"Hey Jimmy", a familiar voice shouted from down the hallway.

"Hey Henry, how are you?", I asked my old friend.

"Oh you know same old defying my asshole father till the end of my days."

Henry is a square and, believe me, in this society it's a good thing to be. You see there's a sort of social class system and squares are at the top. Rectangles and rhombus' are pretty much just middle class but even though they are supposed to be equal they absolutely hate each other.

Henry hated the very idea of the social classes which is interesting considering the fact that his father's in charge.

Henry's voice interrupted my thoughts. "Hey dude have you seen Charlie? I've been looking for his ass." Henry seemed really excited to see Charlie.

"I think I heard him in the chorus room earlier singing about founding fathers." Charlie is so obsessed with that stupid musical.

Henry laughed a bit."I swear if that boy weren't so adorable I would kick his teeth in."

Charlie's pretty much that nerdy kid that everybody's friends with and the fact that he, a rhombus, can be friends with rectangles is pretty progressive in this time.

I still don't get why Henry is always so interested in Charlie, I mean I kind of ship them together but I doubt it. I mean a square and a rhombus, that would mean war.

The bell rang and I walked to class only to find that the love of my life, Stacy Anne Taylor, was sitting right there in the middle my first period.

Stacy jumped from her seat. "Oh my god! Jimmy, how are you?" Stacy's words were like warm silk.

"I'm good Stacy. I see that you got your shape" I gave Stacy an awkward friend hug.

Great now she's gonna think I'm some kid of pervert.

"Yeah, I turned 16 over the summer and Voila! Now I'm a confident rectangle." Stacy put her hands on her hips and did a dorky hero pose. Man her giggle could bring world peace.

Stacy turned to me with a semi-serious look. "Hey... Jimmy", Stacy sounded unsure of what she was about to say, "Listen I really like you and all but..."

Oh god was she really going to this right fucking now.

"my parents will only let me date a rectangle and I you still haven't found your shape yet."

Maybe I could save this. I would give anything just to be with her.

"Stacy listen, my birthday is going to be in a couple weeks and just because I don't have my shape yet doesn't me we still can't hang out. Right?" I smiled awkwardly.

Man I hope she isn't about to pull a bitch move. "I guess but let's keep it as discreet as possible. Okay?" Goddammit. "Yeah, of course." I think the uneasiness in my voice was enough for her to understand how I felt. Well fuck, there goes my better damn school year.
