The cat was held close by a small girl huddled in a dark corner of an alleyway. The girl trembled as the cold wind blew through the abandoned city. Her pale skin was dirty, thick brown hair trailing along the ground. She wore a winter coat, her jeans dirty and worn. The cat meowed softly in her arms, licking her dirty cheeks. She looked at it's black fur and into its golden eyes with her own brown ones.

"I know..." She whispered, her throat dry, "the monsters are going to come soon..." She stood slowly, her legs weak and sore from walking. The cat stood by her, looking up at her with patient eyes. She walked out into the empty street, trash clinging to her boots. The cold air bit at her exposed nose and she shuddered, pulling up her fur lined hood. The cat gave another meow and pawed at her pants. She leaned down and picked it up, sticking it inside her jacket and holding it there. It purred gently and curled up, giving her a reassuring stare. She sighed and began to walk, her feet protesting with each step. The sun did little at warming her back as it traveled toward the horizon. She looked around at the buildings that held no life and her stomach complained for food. She looked down at her cat that ate just about anything it could find and began to think that maybe she should stop being so picky.

She moved through the streets, watching the light of the sun slowly fade. She began to panic as it disappeared, still not being able to find a worthy place to stay. She sped up, her cat's claws digging into her shirt. She stumbled along, her already tired legs being pushed to their limits. The cat protested in her arms and she glanced around with fear.

"Just hold on..." She said with empty lungs. She spotted a building not far from where she stood. It seemed to be a small grocery store on the first floor, the sign dead with light, while the second floor looked like a cozy place, yet the outside didn't hold any hints for what lay inside. She rushed in, the sun not visible. As she ran in and locked the door, things began to move that had not been able to come out during the day. Creatures crawling from the sewers that resembled giant rats crawled out, the sunset making them squeal in discomfort. The creatures from the day resembling other day animals that despised the darkness took their places down below, wanting to sleep. Owl like creatures with glinting green eyes flew through the sky and the rats began their hunt for the helpless. The cat in her arms hissed softly and she pet his head gently, watching them wearily from inside the dark building.

"If only those scientists weren't so curious..." she said softly, watching what was once a small animal search with the thrust for blood. She sighed and turned to the store to see shelves stocked with items that I needed. She looked at it in surprised, "Food..." she said and let her cat go, rushing to the shelves and searching through them for the most delicious food she could find. She instantly went for the freezers and pulled out some good looking juice. She pulled bread and peanut butter from the shelves with her cat trailing behind her. She glanced outside, the creatures still prowling, and rushed upstairs. The second floor was something she did not expect to find in the city. It was a small library with bookshelves lining the walls. A large, comfortable looking couch sat in the room, a large beanie bag also present in the building. She instantly went for the beanie bag and sunk into the soft furniture. She took no time to relax and tore into the food, eating as much as she could. Her cat chewed on the bread and she made a mental note to try and find some cat food later. After eating as much as she could, she gladly found large blankets and pillows, making the beanie bag as comfortable as she could. She smiled for the first time in a while and sighed with satisfaction. My cat crawling in with me after a satisfying helping of the bread. He purred loudly and curled up inside my arms, rubbing his head against my chest. I smiled and fell asleep, temporarily forgetting the creatures that prowled outside.
