Chapter Fourty-Eight

It was nearly impossible for Seline to describe how she felt when she awoke to his sleeping form the next morning. She had her head laid on his chest, and his arm was circled around her waist. When she turned her head to look up at him, it felt as if her heart was beating for the first time. It was truly remarkable. She had wanted him to make her feel something again, and he did.

She knew that he wouldn't be awake for a long time, as vampires needed much less sleep than the Asgardian's or the humans. So, she got dressed, and went to find some form of caffeine.

"Good morning, Friday," she said when she walked into the kitchen, and the AI was quick to answer her.

"Good morning, Seline," Friday replied. "Welcome back. We hope you enjoy your stay here."

She couldn't help but smile a little. The artificial intelligence had better hosting skills than a hotel manager.

She had finally gotten some coffee, and was now sitting at the island in the kitchen. She checked her phone out of boredom, then finally decided to ask Friday where everyone had gone.

"Hey, Friday?" Seline said, happy that she had heard Jordan mention the name of the AI.

"Yes, Miss Volkov?" the AI asked, and it almost surprised Seline how well the AI spoke. It was interesting how Stark had made her sound as if Seline was talking to a real person.

"Where is everyone today?" Seline asked her, curiosity filling her.

"Mr. Rogers, Ms. Romanoff, and Mr. Barton are on a mission. Mr. Stark has gone out to deal with business. Everyone else is still in the building."

"Thank you," Seline replied.

"You're very welcome, Miss Volkov."

Seline decided that she would leave a note for Loki, who was still completely fast asleep. She wrote that she would either be on the roof, or had gone out, and that she would see him soon. She wasn't planning on being gone too long.

She went up to the roof, and couldn't help but smile a little. The breeze was beautiful, dancing across her skin the same way that Loki's hands had. The sounds of the cars down below echoed along with the sirens. It seemed like you could never go anywhere in New York without hearing a siren. She certainly didn't mind... After all, she hated silence more than anything else.

Seline heard her phone start to ring, and pulled it out of her back pocket before answering.

"Hello?"

"S-Seline-"

She recognized that voice, but just barely. It was Tony.

"Tony? Are you all right?" she immediately asked, having heard the stuttering and the shakiness in his voice.

"I-I can't- I can't-"

She could hear the repulsors of his suit working in the background, but then she realized that the repulsors weren't in the background at all. They were coming from behind her. She spun around, dropping the phone when she saw him.

He was flying towards the building, but two of his repulsors had quit on him. Now, only the ones on his left hand and right leg were working. His armour had many different scratches and dents in it, and part of it looked like someone had sliced right through it with a sword. He was so close to the edge, and she would have been able to grab onto him, but the repulsor on his left hand suddenly sparked, then died out. The one on his foot did the same afterwards. And before she could catch him, he was falling.

She bolted towards the edge, and without a second thought, she leapt off of it.

Tony was going to die if she didn't intervene. She knew that. He had been beaten so badly that his suit refused to work, and falling from that height with those injuries would surely cause his death. She was already weak to begin with because of what she had done to save Jordan, but she knew that she could help him. She knew that she was able to help Tony. All she needed to do was get close enough.

She dove head-first, going at a far faster speed than Tony. She grabbed his nearly unconscious body, and pulled him to her, wrapping her arms around his torso. She needed to break their fall. There was no way she could land on her feet, not from this high up.

It felt like only a few seconds before her spine suddenly hit the metal. She could feel a great deal of her bones shattering underneath her skin, and her muscles tore when her bones scraped at them.

They had landed on an SUV, and she could hear people rushing away from them as they screamed. They didn't know what to do, of course. Any sane person would assume that the two of them were long gone. And for everyone around them, that meant that Tony Stark was dead.

From what she could tell, Tony would survive. His heartbeat was strong and his lungs still took in breath normally. He would be alright, as long as someone got to them in time. Specifically, someone that knew that she would still live even after what had happened.

The screams echoed in her ears, along with the many questions surrounding whether or not it was actually Tony Stark in the suit. They were horrified.

Her head fell to the left, and she saw the doors of Stark tower open. Thor and Loki both came running out the front doors, trying their best to push their way through the crowds. Jordan and Jacob followed after them, and she thought for sure that Jordan was contemplating using his speed and strength to get there fast enough. But he was smart, and he kept a cool head.

The last thing that Seline saw was Loki's fear-filled expression.

And, just like every other day in New York, the last thing she heard was a siren.
