*Power has never been so beautiful*
I hissed and raised my hand to my face, hopeing the reflection was just a cruel trick. But it couldn't be, that tear was real, I could feel them wetten my finger tips as I explored my face. And the claws protruding from the tips of my fingers in bloody pointed curves were real. The proof being the sting there touch of them scratched into my cheek. I waited for my blood to follow after the claw, but there was nothing. Like cutting clay, the deep scratches in my face opened to reveal more of the dead toned flesh but they didnt bleed. Instead they slowly curled shut. She's stealing again.
Just as more tears began to trail down my cheeks a howl broke threw the night out from the forest behind me. the wolves were coming. Broken, I couldnt muster the strength in that moment to care.
I took a deep breath, threw away my sorrow and continued my run back in the direction towards home.
As I neared my apartment building I heard the familiar huff and puff of air threw a snout and slowed to duck behind the storage garage far off from the main buildings. Peeking over the corner of a shed I couldnt contain the hiss that escaped past my lips. There standing below my apartment were five wolves, two shifted and sniffing the perimeter of the building while the other three tried their best to crack the lock of my neighbors apartment door. Idiot dogs.
"Let me try, you've been at it for almost ten minutes."
"I've almost got it. wait... ha!"
The door popped open with a click and the wolves stormed the apartment, giving me a chance to leave without much risk of exposure.
I ran down and away from the forest hoping the distance from the woods would help me to avoid any more of the pack. Block by block the trees became more scarce and in their place grew an onslaught of newly constructed condos. I was in the suburbs, a human dwelling and a safe haven to those who ran from wolves. Thriving in small american communities such as these the mutts wouldnt dare risk exposure here. There survival depended on human ignorance, mine on the other hand did not.
Still, I knew my appearance was less then mundane and sure to stir trouble and perhaps panic so I tried my best to avoid the street lights and pushed my bangs into my face. Hoping to at the very least veil my eyes. Someone else had the same idea because while turning the corner near an old victorian house I bumped shoulders with a shadow.
"Sorry."
I tried to keep my head down and move on my way but before I could walk another yard my wrist was trapped in someones tight grip.
"Carrie."
I was frozen in place, my heart hammering out of my chest. I felt stupid, of course in this part of town I was safe from shifted wolves. But the creatures also had their human forms. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
"That's your name right, Carrie. I'm glad I found you, Damien is freaking out."
The man had made his way in front of me now, and by the feel of his hands, and look of his legs he was strong. I kept my head down, and let my hair fall to further cover my face.
"I hope Damien didn't scare you, I know your confused and all but this will all make sense soon."
My eyes began to itch the longer he held me and that familiar ring in the back of my head slowly changed, tuning in on a mess of gumbled conversation. A hundred different voices argued in my head about locations, possible sightings, and concerns. Wolf activity. Blues telepathy honed in on the pack link until, with concentration, I could focus on single voices. I think he found her. One lower voice called, and everyother conversation went immediately silent.
"Carrie you're safe, I promise."
*My turn*
My head shot up against my own will, and the grip on my wrist tightened. Instictively I knew the wolf that stood before me was young having yet to experience his first millenia. He would be easy to take out, too inexperienced for such close combat. He opened his mouth to speak, eyes wide, but before he could my free arm shot out and my claws tore over his face. The boy dropped into a heap at my feet. I towered over him and despite my best efforts to control myself my foot shot out and kicking deep into his stomach. He coiled further into himself but remained down. Blood pooled around his head growing slowly to engulf the toes of my sneakers in the red mass. Nausea hit me and I was greatful his face had turned against the concrete so I didnt have to see the damage Id inflicted there.
What have I done?
*He touched you and you did nothing, someone had to put him in his place.*
I killed him.
*It takes more than a scratch to kill a wolf, even a young one.*
Then, he's alive?!
*Barely.*
The mummers in the back of my head came screaming back as a howl, not to far away, broke the silence of night. The cry stirred the wolf at my feet, and the blood that had pooled outwards moments ago began rolling back as though our earlier scene was suddenly playing in rewind. What in gods name! Just as I turned to run, horrified and confused, I caught sight of my reflection in the door of a parked car. Normal, I looked completely normal again. No bulging veins, and thankfully no inverted eyes. Just plain old me. I'd never been so happy to see that ordinary face.
