It turned out that Maz and Derek shared three out of their seven classes, plus lunch. Maz started to look forward to gym, rather than being afraid of being picked last, or worse, playing dodgeball. Being exiled from society was a lot easier when someone was there to keep her company.

Maz scurried into her science class, first thing in the morning. This class she dreaded, because her lab partner was none other than Her Highness Queen Shannon. It was just Maz’s luck that today the class was starting a week-long experiment.
“Yippee,” Maz muttered. She couldn’t help but glance over at Shannon, who waved at her partner with an innocent grin. Maz shuddered. Today was going to be a long day.
Their science teacher, an older woman, set out the supplies the class would need, warning them to be sure to take proper safety precautions with the mild acid they would be using. Maz gulped. She was so klutzy, anything could happen.
Shannon began to organize her and Maz’s experiment. Maz knew that the queen bee’s favorite subject was science, and was the only class she even bothered to do better than okay in. Shannon went up to the front of the room to don her goggles and grab the chemical they would need. Maz began to measure out the other ingredients, concentrating carefully. She barely noticed Shannon walking back down the aisle holding a huge beaker full of acid, far more than anyone would need for the experiment.
Suddenly, the cheer captain squealed and fell to the floor. Acid spewed from the beaker as it flew out of Shannon’s hands, splashing all over Maz’s beat up sneakers and ripped jeans.
Everyone exploded in a flurry of movement, despite the teacher’s efforts to keep them still. Shannon was unharmed, unscathed by the accidental destruction. All the glass and acid had flown in Maz’s general direction. The unfortunate victim was rushed to the nurse’s office, where her sneakers were sliced off her feet and disposed with her soaked jeans. Maz was also shoved under the emergency chemical decontamination shower, and icy water gushed over her.
I’m going to smell like rusty water for the rest of the week, Maz groaned inwardly. One thing kept running through her mind: the mischevious smile Shannon wore when she crashed to the ground. Was it really an accident?
