"What's your name?"
I stared at the blond boy in front of me, confused about what I should do. No one ever speaks to me since they know I can't talk back. He's new and only joined our playgroup today.
"Hey!" I heard Calum's voice yell from across the playground. Calum is my brother, but he's incredibly defensive of me, he's actually my twin and is only 13 minutes older but he acts like he's my parents. Reminder: he's only 6.
"I just asked what her name is." The blond boy sat next to me said, his blue eyes were shiny and I could stare into them all day.
"Are you new?" Calum asked. The boy nodded his head. "Well, I'm Calum and this is my sister Annabelle."
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Luke." The boy said.
I signed to Calum and he translated to Luke 'it's nice to meet you too'
"Annabelle talks in sign language." Calum said, "only I can speak sign language." He said proudly.
I signed back you don't 'speak' sign and I know sign too!
"Other than Annabelle" Calum said to Luke.
"Can you teach me sign? I want to learn." Luke said.
I nodded my head. I walked inside and Luke followed me, the teachers always let me come inside because they know I don't play with the other kids since some of them didn't like to spend time with me.
I got a whiteboard and wrote down the word 'hello' and taught Luke the simple sign. Then I showed him how to sign 'yes' and 'no'.
We didn't talk the entire lunch time. But it was really fun, I think Luke was having fun as well.
That itself was the start of a beautiful friendship.
