Smoke curled around the trees, sparks showering their roots. The Sparrow's heart skipped a beat. It had begun.

"Help" The Sparrow so desperately searched through the clouds of dust and ember, for his mother. Please, Help!" As the branch quivered, the nest started to fall from the tree. The Sparrow flapped his wings, but fell straight to the forest floor.

He gasped for air, as darkness started to close in. The roar of monsters, was slowly approaching. Their arms brutally slicing through trees. The Sparrow gasped in horror, his home.

He picked himself up and ran for the river. Smoke pierced his throat, stealing his breath away before he took them. The roaring was everywhere now. Sparks flew in front of the sparrows eyes. He screamed out in agony, but only the monsters were there, to hear him.

Knowing the river was just ahead, he closed his eyes, and plunged back into a fast waddle. It was darkening now, as he ran the smoke got thicker and thicker until he could see no more. The stream was just ahead, he was sure.

Without knowing, the poor Sparrow ran straight over the river bend. Still unable to fly, he fell into brown waters. Brown waters that were once, crystal clear. How could this all happen in one day - his home, his family. Lost. He should have been angry, sad, but there was only fear.

Brown waves pushed him under the surface of the water, down to where the crocodiles rest. But there were no crocodiles. To the Sparrows sorrow, he saw through the water, bones. All the fish had died, and along with them, their predators.

The Sparrow's scream, was muffled by the water as he tried to resurface. He had drifted down stream, to where he played as a hatchling. Now the Sparrow saw doom itself.

Corpses of trees and friends, still, in the ground, in the same places they had been last summer. The sparrow died inside. Replacing his familiarities, a grey tree stood, taller than the sky.

Smoke poured over the top of this tree. The Sparrow cried out still barely able to breath. Sleep was slowly over coming him, he tried so hard to stay afloat. Finally he gave in and sunk down into the depths. There was no resistance.

You monsters, you humans. You did this.

This one is a little bit, darker than the previous short story. Tell me what you think. Did you realise who the monsters were before the end of the story? Thank you so much for reading.
