I was only six years old when my mother had us go to visit my grandmother. Her health was worsening, so the visits became more frequent. She lived in a beautiful place, with a large meadow nearby. I would run free in this meadow, as she and my mother would slowly follow. One day, I found a little dandelion with all the seeds on top. My grandmother knelt down next to me.
"Ella, want to know something important about these little seeds?"
I nodded happily. I wondered what was so special about them.
"If you get a little jar, and collect one thousand of these little seeds, you can make a wish. It is guaranteed to come true. It is something only our family knows though, so don't spread it around."
I nodded again, before asking if I could have a jar to collect them. She took me back inside to help me with it. This little dandelion gave me thirty of the one thousand seeds I needed. This is where I began collecting.
As a child I began writing down a list of wishes to have. I wish for a big mansion, a million dollars, an acting career, or just to be the most popular girl in my play group. I collected them all on paper, but as I grew older I would mark off some and add new ones. All of my wishes appeared selfish, as I never wished for something better for those around. I was young and stupid, yet happily so. As high school inched closer, I lost the ambition to collect the seeds. The jar sat on my shelf, as a childhood memory. I had collect three hundred forty seven seeds. I slowly began my interest in art and decided to join the art club at my school, where I was the shy girl. I did not have any true friends, just a lot of acquaintances. I was happy with my quiet life, despite my mother's concern. She wished I could be like the other teenage girls. I just had no interest. I had my own world and I wanted to keep it safe. No one could tear it down if I kept to myself.
This changed as prom came around. I was now a senior, and everyone felt I should go to the prom. I, however, had no interest, or a date. I lit a lavender candle in my room that night. I enjoyed my solitude. I was hoping to continue a quiet life in the future. Honestly, it was a bit surprising considering as a child I wanted to be famous. I could not persuade to my mother that not going to prom would be alright, so I was going to have to go this once. She was going to take me dress shopping, but not before I found a date.
My surprise was during the week, seven boys had asked me to the prom. Two were juniors and the rest were seniors. Some were sports players. My shallow companions declared me a beautiful girl, and suggested I bring the pill with me. I suppose they meant well, but sex was not on my mind. I laid down in my bed, putting my mind to rest until the next day.
