It was a nice day outside in the year 3502, everyone was the same, same houses as far as the eye could see, same grey boring clothing, same dead eyes that stared into the distance yearning for freedom from the requirements to live in their civilization. Every day was exactly the same, the wake-eat-work-sleep-repeat schedule was kept as law and there was absolutely no time for leisure at all. Our story begins on this day, it will probably end on this day as well if things are kept in order.
A sixteen year old blond girl was, unlike everyone else, was completely content with her current situation and relished in the artificial sunlight that splashed across the glass walls of the protective dome surrounding her small community. Everything was fine.
That day had been a good day, at least for her. The school system had decided to change their standards and up the pace of learning with neural enhancers so the students could learn faster and make more progress in less time. She was happy with their decision, because it meant that the year might end quicker and they could start their service work in preparation for their future jobs over the summer. Many of the other students were very displeased with the school's decision because it meant that the school would be packing even more useless information into their heads, most of which they would most likely forget over the summer.
The girl walked home quickly, excited to tell her family about the new improvements. But when she got home she called for her parents, but they didn't answer. All of the rooms were dark and they didn't seem to have been touched since this morning. This was confusing because her family was always scheduled to be home exactly 30 min before her school got out.
Her parents had always started cleaning before she got home, making the house loud with the sounds of the vacuum and clashing of dishes. It was strange, seeing the house dark and empty.
The girl looked around and flicked the lights on, she spotted a small piece of paper on the table, that wasn't right that table was always supposed to be perfectly clean. She inspected the paper, it seemed to be blank on both sides. She decided that it was too strange to just throw away, so she shoved it into her nearly nonexistent pocket on her jeans. She continued to look around the house, nothing was out of the ordinary except for the paper and her missing parents, she she assumed that they had to go somewhere last minute and attempted to leave a note, though, they usually had everything planned out on the digital calendar on the refrigerator.
Just then an idea popped into her head, she could just check the calendar!
The girl ran to the fridge to find out what her parents were up to. The smart projector flickered on, they hadn't decided to upgrade to the holo-glass yet, because it broke to easily and many people were experiencing problems with them. The fridge lit up with the calendar, to her disappointment today just had the usual daily routines, nothing special to allow her parents to be missing.
She went to her room to wait for them to get back.
A few hours of homework passed and she began to worry, what if her parents didn't get back before it was time for dinner, she would have to make dinner herself, but how could she do that, she didn't know where anything was in this house. She finished her homework, and the rest of the day was hers. As she opened the door to go outside, she noticed it was getting dark, but she didn't care. The fake sunset flickered like exaggerated flames on the horizon, it was beautiful. Some people considered this place a prison, but she failed to see how, it was a beautiful place, a peaceful place where everything ran in exact perfect order. Except for today. She went for a walk up the street and spied something out of the corner of her eye.
In small space between two buildings, darkness was building up from the lack of light in the night. The alley seemed extra dark for some reason, and seemed worthy of investigation. She peeked her head around the corner of the first building and saw something strange, stranger than anything she had ever seen before. The object was floating and moving, it looked like a someone took an ice cream scoop out of the stars in the sky and it was melting in a ball before her eyes. She was curious about to what it was and went to touch it. The world around her evaporated in an instant and she was suddenly floating through space. The void of space was filled with stars, some extremely bright and others barely flickering into existence in the distance. She was very confused, where was her house, the alleyway, the way back. She didn't know. She had never really had to think for herself in her society, everything had always been planned out, ready to be done and make way for the next thing. Her problem solving skills were weak and she depended on the world around her to solve her problems for her, at this moment she had to be an individual, and make her own choices.
The girl looked around, nothing, more nothing, Nothing but stars and vibrantly colored dust as far as the eye could see. Then out of the corner of her eye, she saw something. A bright yellow figure came out of the shadows behind her.
It says, "What's your name Kid"
as the area around was engulfed in blue flames.
