Shes Gone?

How many times are you gonna make me say I'm sorry?

Are you actually sorry?

No!

Riley sat in her room, tears in her eyes and thoughts of Maya running through her head. She just came home from Maya's funeral... the funeral of her best friend and her body wasn't there. Riley can remember the night so vividly it was like it happened yesterday.

"Maya this is just a stupid fight" Riley said to Maya as they argued for the tenth time that day about Lucas. He called her a short stack of pancakes and Riley agreed with him. Riley couldn't understand why Maya was upset about this but refused to stand down.

"I've had enough of this. I'm going home." Maya said as she headed for the window

"You're being ridiculous! This is stupid and you know it so why don't you just admit it?!" Riley yelled, finally voicing her opinion on the matter

"Goodbye Riley" Maya said as she crawled out of the bay window.

And that was the last time Maya saw her. They fought over a stupid nickname and the next day she was announced dead. The police never found her body but they say there was no way she could have survived that crash. The taxi had a head on collision with a semi truck, the taxi driver died before the ambulance could get there and just as they showed up the car caught fire. No evidence of Maya's body was ever found except a cell phone that read a text from Lucas saying

"Maya please listen to me. I'm sorry, I didn't realise what I did when I said that. Please come home so I can make this better"

"Maya?"

They held the funeral at a quiet part of town, Katy, (Maya's mother) spent the whole day crying into her husband, Shawn's arm. Zay and Smackle were mostly quiet but spoke up when asked questions or talked to, you know people giving their condolences and what not.

You stood up for Lucas and not me!

Farkle almost didn't show up, he felt guilty because he understood why Maya was upset during the fight but didn't back her in it. But he spent the event by Riley's side, holding her hand as they both laid to rest their best friend since forever.

Riley never said a word, she just silently cried to herself, trying to hold it together because "peaches wouldn't want me to cry for her."

Lucas didn't speak either, I mean not that anyone wanted to speak during a funeral but he seemed most quiet. Almost angry. And as soon as they buried the casket he left without saying a word to anyone. He left flowers for her but said nothing.

When he got home that night he threw a flower vase against the wall, shattering it upon impact, his parents were out of town and tried to catch a plane in for the funeral but it was delayed due to bad weather. So he was completely alone.

He sat on the floor of his bedroom and cried, genuine tears fell down his face as he tried to keep himself together, trying to think of how he could have avoided this, how he could have saved her. If only he didn't call her a name, if only he ran after her when Riley said she left her house angrily. If only he did something more.

He imagined her walking into the room, surprising him. Saying she never died and it was all a bad dream, telling him that she loved him as much as he loved her and promising to never leave. He imagined him apologising over and over to her and telling her he never wanted to see her get hurt because it pained him.

I'm not standing up for him.

The next few days after the funeral were the worst for everyone. None of them ever imagined life without Maya and now they had to live that nightmare. They were allowed to stay home from school due to the event but they didn't care about that. Smackle tried to bring everyone together so they could mourn with each other and share stories but no one wanted to leave their house.

Lucas felt repulsed by the thought of moving on, finding a way to live without his blonde beauty seemed impossible. And for days he tried to come up with ways for her to still be alive, maybe she got out of the car and is lost in the forest... maybe she never got in that taxi and is alone somewhere scared to come home... but nothing he thought or said or did could possibly bring her back.
