She's now used to make the cold and stoic leading man seem more human and to give him a plausible reason for treating everyone like garbage. Leading man doesn't tell anybody about her because he doesn't want your pity. Leading lady only found out when, in an apprehensive Fifty-Shades-of-Grey reveal, she finds the mother's shrine in his bedroom. (He sacrifices small rodents to her every other Tuesday.)
