His eyes briefly flicked up to the window and the rolling green lawn before he signed the note with a flourish of his fountain pen.
The expensive paper lost some of its crisp perfection, he thought with a sigh, when rolled up.

"Hope," he called. A silver dove alighted on his arm, presenting him with a small tube attached to its leg with thin leather straps. Carefully he stuck the paper inside, then fastened the top with a metal lid. For a brief moment the bird held his gaze with an intelligent eye before soaring from his arm to the windowsill, where it hesitated for a moment.

"Go, find what you were meant to find," he spoke, and the dove launched itself out the window and through the fine mist of rain.
