So this is one of my first stories so I'm sorry if I have grammar mistakes or it's not the greatest. But enjoy!!

I awake in the passenger seat of my dad's SUV and for a split second I forget why we were here in the car but then I remember:

My dad has gotten a job in Indiana.

So some of my friends I have now have moved from places before, but I never have really understood what it was like.

Until now.

I feel like the world I knew is dissolving inch by inch the farther we drive away from my city.

I lived in Seattle. And I know lots of people stereotype us all as "hipsters" or whatever thinking we can't leave our houses without our dogs or coffee and being nature freaks. But honestly, I've never owned a dog, coffee tastes like dirt to me, and I've never really been into the save the planet stuff.

"Ave, we're getting out at the next exit for gas and a break." my dad says

He hasn't said a lot since we've started driving 4 hours ago other than "Yeah, that's a cool cloud." "Look at that tree." and "Wow look, the sky is brown."

The sky is brown.

Yeah, if that's not a sign to turn back around to my coffee loving state and forget about this, I don't know what is.

"Okay." I say

My dad was a semi-big artist in Seattle which is pretty awesome. He likes painting forests and mountains and things like that mostly. We lived in an apartment my whole life, but with only two people it wasn't bad. His salary for painting wasn't the greatest though, so he also worked in a sandwich shop just down the street.

When I was 7 my mom died. She was killed while driving home early from work for my 7th birthday party and was struck by another car. We waited hours for her to show up but she never did. The next morning we got a call from the police saying she was killed in a car accident. And I have never celebrated my birthday since that day.

Sometimes I wonder was has become of that person in the car that took my mom's life. If they're successful, do they have a family, are they happy?

"Okay, go inside and get some snacks for us." dad says. Interrupting my thoughts.

We pull up to the gas station and I get out of the car and stretch. It's about 1am right now and the gas station is dead.

I walk to the door and go inside and get a Slim Jim, fruit snacks and a Dr. Pepper. Then I get my dad a Payday bar and a coffee. The only other lady in the gas station checks me out and puts the snacks in a plastic bag. She has a purple streak in her hair just like Lola.

Lola is my best friend who is not scared of anything. And I mean ANYTHING. She laughs at scenes of horror films where most people are peeing their pants. She does what she wants to do without caring about judgement. She's like the person I can never be.

"Have a nice evening." says the lady

"Thank you, you too."

I head back out to the car and get in.

"We have about 8 more hours until we reach Indiana. Do you wanna rest?" dad asks

"Yeah, I'm going to sleep for a while." I say

In less than 10 hours we will be in Indiana. What is it even like? Oh god, will there be overloads of corn and stuff? I really hope not.

I lay my head on the window and fall asleep. Thinking of my friends back home.
