'Life isn't always fair', my mom always say after she talks about my late father. It seems like she says it more for her comfort. Almost sounding guilty. I never bother to question it though.

"Mia come do the dishes!" my mother screams to me from downstairs. Why must she scream? I'm not death, nor that far away. But I do as I was told. I try to be the obedient child she wanted. Everyday, (or what seems like everyday) she talks about how I would've had a sibling if my father wasn't so suicidal.

Washing the dishes isn't fun but I find the light at the end of the tunnel anyway. Outside the window I see kids playing, mothers gardening, sun shining, and for a split moment I see a land not considered poor, or low.

That second was the shortest second ever. I then realize what the children are playing with, what mothers are gardening with. . .Nothing. The kids are just dancing around and the women are digging with bare hands. It's been like this for years. Yet the king refuses to do anything.

"Mother!"

No answer.

"Mother!" I try again louder. Still no answer. She must've went out or something. Since she did, why can't I?

Once I wash my hands, and grab my book, I walk out the crappy door. I am honestly surprised the house is still standing on the ground.

The lowlands really do live up to the name. Sidewalks are barely together, as well as the street. People here don't even have cars so I guess that wouldn't matter. There is one place that is not an eyesore. The Grand Garden. Back in the 1800's some guy built it. He was a highlander but cared about us.

On my freetime I letup here to read. Books are a getaway as well as music. Since I have no associates of course. Well only one but that one has a full family. As for me, I'm unnoticeable, a shadow, something people don't normally look at.

People rarely come here. Why? The simple reason is because it isn't lowlife made. How can such a beautiful thing be denied entry? Jealousy could be one. Maybe hate. Although I absolutely despise higher life, this structure is too grand. Not to mention peaceful.

Well it was peaceful until this boy came and sat next to me. He looked clean so I know he wasn't from here. Nice low cut hair, warm brown eyes, fair skin. Somehow I didn't realize how hard I was examining.

Boys make me uncomfortable and squirmy. It's like looking at a statue try to move to a different park...weird.

"Are you ok?" well he noticed.

"Well a power above mine is sitting next to me. So no, I am not ok." my mouth will get me in a lot of trouble one day.

"Sorry," he finally looks at me and continues, "I'm Liam." he finishes nodding his head as a greeting.

"Mia." is all I manage to say.

"I never understood why this masterpiece goes unused."

"And I still don't understand why you're here now." It honestly sound a lot nicer in my head.

"Well the highlands are surprisingly boring." How? I can't dot my finger on it. The rest of the while was silent. I have nothing to talk about with him.

"How old are you?" he asks.

"How old are you?" I lead on.

"18. I would guess you just turned 17?"

"How can you tell?" He knows it wasn't a guess. Maybe he's a mind reader or something.

"Just look 17."

Lie...

"What's your power? I know you have one. Mind reader? Control water? Or maybe even fire?"

"Teleporter. Only one known alive. Nothing special."

At least he won't look through my head. I always found that ability weird. Why would you even want to see inside a mind?

"Well it was a pleasure meeting you...Mia?"

"Yep."

And then with the blink of an eye, he's gone.

After a while I decide to go home. Maybe then my mother would be there. She always goes off unannounced, it gets really weird sometimes.

My street would never be lit up. What are street lights? They seem to not exist down here. That's another thing these so called eminence people deprive us of. We aren't even allowed the liberty of feeling safe.

One day this will all change. All the people who neglected us will pay. Especially the King with his little family of princes and their bethroned princesses.

"Mom, I have returned. I also have told you about this door. This place is dangerous. " Usually I get answers but this doesn't feel right.

This house isn't big. It doesn't take me long to search and come to the conclusion that she isn't here. Where she could have gone? I'm not sure. Me not being sure means I have no place to start looking.

I highly doubt any of these people we call neighbors seen anything.

Dammmit.

This place is big, big enough that it could take forever to find a short middle- aged woman. Let alone ask about one. They're everywhere, and that's not an exaggeration.

I wont get anything accomplished by standing here thinking about hitspots. All I can do is go on a whim.

When I open the door ready to go on a search I see a note near the mail box.

Don't worry about me. I will be home soon. There's just some important business I have to take care of. I love and hope to see you soon.

Ps: Get some rest and eat well.
Love,
Mom

I seriously doubt this was there before I walked through those doors. How did it get there. And if it was my mom why couldn't she tell me in person.

What is she hiding from me?
