When was the last time you had a fortune cookie? Chances are, it was after eating from a Chinese restaurant. Everyone knows that the Chinese invented fortune cookies! At least, that's what everyone thought they knew.
Fortune cookies were actually made in San Francisco! Not only that, but they were invented there by Japanese-Americans. These first fortune cookies were made in a bakery named Benkyodo.
Over time, Chinese restaurants picked up on the idea and started giving out the cookies as dessert. Those that didn't got complaints, and soon hopped aboard the fortune cookie train. Because of the widespread distribution of fortune cookies via Chinese restaurants, people assumed that they were a Chinese tradition. Oh, were they wrong.
