Since Kevin had left Frankfurt over a month ago for the City of Love, I can't say things were going great between the two of us. It was obvious long distance relationships were not our thing - we were needy people who crave each other's attention and affection all the time and the distance was just killing this relationship.
Of course you could argue that technology bridged that gap - social media/networking sites, Skype, phone calls, endless messaging apps - but it just wasn't the same.
As time passed, phone calls got shorts, received messages were slowly forgotten to be replied to, and even stalking each other on IG and twitter became less fun.
What really sent us in a tailspin was forgetting our month-sary - an event we kept celebrating even after reaching our first official anniversary. When we realised that we both missed the date, he invited me over to Paris and I agreed understanding that it was time to face reality and have a talk.
When I landed on a cloudy afternoon at Charles De Gaulle, I was beyond cranky. The flight was delayed a little, there was turbulence, the guy sitting beside me kept puking. It was a mess. I just wanted to lie down and rest but Kevin was no where to be seen.
He said he'd be here to welcome me but he's no where in sight and I'm starting to feel a little like fool standing in the middle of arrivals, with my carry-on bag looking like a lost child.
"Amelie!" I heard a familiar voice call me. "Amelie!"
I saw my boyfriend weave his way through the crowd. He jumped up and down waving a bouquet of assorted colourful flowers in the air to get my attention.
I couldn't help but smile and giggle when he looks up and around him to notice that a few petals came loose from the rigorous waving he made. He looked about ready to pick up the petals and try to glue them back on by force of will; but when I called his name he looked up, and gave the brightest smile making my heart burst with joy.
"Amelie!" He said your name once again running at full speed to get to me only to stop a few steps looking embarrassed.
"I'm so sorry Amelie!" He says looking remorseful. "I didn't mean to make you wait. There was heavy traffic; and then the navigator froze; and I got a little lost and I'm so sorry!" He says all in one breath. "Flowers!" he says holding the bouquet up to me but puts it down when he notices the state they were in.
I quickly take it from him. "Thank you. They're gorgeous" I say, smiling widely before pecking his cheek. I was so touched that he'd do something like this - not that I should have been surprised. Kevin was always the romantic, cheesy type but he was like that because he knew I like that.
He looked away embarrassed but I could see from his twinkling eyes that he was appeased by my response to his gesture.
He took my carry-on luggage on one hand and weaved his free fingers with mine, leading me out of the arrival area.
I took the opportunity to just drink in the sight of him. I didn't realize just how much I had missed him and his touch, until my heart constricted then felt completely elated as we walked hand in hand. I noticed that his hair had grown a little, and his skin was a tad more tan than when he left, probably from all the training under the French sun.
Still, there was something stopping me from just jumping on him and kissing the daylights out of him, until I kissed away all our problems away.
Maybe because kissing didn't really solve problems; it just pushed it back for a little while.
The ride back to his hotel suite was silent; but not the silent good like how it used to be, when we were just content holding hands and the occasional smile at each other when we find the other staring.
