Kathryn, wrapped up in a thick aqua parka, leaned against the railing on the S.S. Marina. She stared out at the shining ice, reflecting the late morning sun, and pushed her glasses back up the bridge of her nose, a sub-conscious habit of hers when in deep thought.
Tyler walked up behind her, his boots making soft thuds on the metal deck of the icebreaker. He sidled up beside her, then mirrored her pose; elbows on the railing, chin resting in gloved hands. Kathryn looked through the side of her glasses at Tyler, her face as expressionless and blank as the icy expanse before them.
Tyler, sensing her gaze, casually put his arm around her shoulders and grinned, though still not looking directly at her. Kathryn sighed and rolled her eyes, but leaned into his embrace anyways and rested her head on his shoulder. He rested his head on Kathryn's and pulled her closer.
She finally gave up maintaining a straight face and smiled. Once upon a time, Kathryn would've fought back against Tyler had he done anything like this - and he had, had done worse. The thought brought back old memories, faded and blurred like photos from a film canister.
After what seemed like forever, the two separated and went below deck to the Conference room, where the other 4 were waiting, hovering over a large map. As Tyler and Kathryn came in, his hand on her waist, Dawn and Amaya looked up. Dawn and Amaya, the other girls on the icebreaker and Kathryn's best friends, traded looks that clearly said 'Oooooh!'
Kathryn was vaguely reminded of grade school, when if a girl and a guy were paired together by someone, the others would point and make 'oooh'ing noises. She never did understand why they did that - it was simply a matter of what a superior decided and shouldn't be questioned.
Kathryn and Tyler began contemplating the map of the land around them. Three pins were marked in certain places - all sights of a murder. Two of them polar bears, one of them human. Another map on the wall had a man's picture taped to it - Josiah Carroll's mugshot. A two-time prison sentence server, he was running on the loose around the Arctic plains, illegally killing polar bears for fur rugs.
The grim feeling settled over the six of them like a blanket. They had done their homework - now it was time for action.
