(I hope you don't mind if I choose two of my favorite Pokemon for the starters ^.^)

Spark stays behind in the main lab as Professor Willow leads me to a staircase. I can hear the three of them chatting and laughing amongst themselves as we walk up the stairs. I wonder why Spark would just leave them behind to come traveling on an adventure with some stranger? They do seem happy enough...

My thoughts trail off and my ears decide to follow the tock-tock sound of Professor Willow's shoes walking up the stairs. Other than that, the silence is awkward as hell. I keep looking at the ground for a while longer, but as I open my mouth to speak, Professor Willow is already talking.

"Do you know why I wanted Spark to join you on your adventure?" Okay, wait, what? The sudden comment stops me in my tracks. I look up at Willow, confused. Seeing the puzzled expression on my face, he laughs.

"What, you're surprised?"

"Well, yeah, of course." Why Spark?

"Well, for me, it makes sense to give you what you lack on an adventure such as this." he continues walking up the stairs, and I follow him. "You're brave enough to go out on your own by yourself, and you're definitely smart and intelligent enough to take care of yourself. Both Candela and Blanche possess these traits. But you're missing the caring, crazy, and happy. That's Spark. Spark's the caring, crazy, and happy. It only makes sense."

We get to the top of the stairs, and Willow stops at the door. "Now, I'm sorry to say that there have been a lot of trainers coming by recently, so we don't have as many original starter Pokemon as we did in the past."

"Sure, I don't mind that much."

"Alrighty then. Here they are!" He swings open the door. To be honest, I expected the room to look like any other room in the entire lab: gray, metallic, bland, dull, austere, anything to describe boring. The room actually looks like a daycare. Tiny little first evolution Pokemon are filled to the brim with excitement and are bouncing off the walls with energy - some of them are literally bouncing off the walls.

"Shoot, how am I supposed to choose two from this bunch?" I mutter to myself. Willow shrugs.

"Whatever feels right to you, I guess. That's the advice I give to everyone around here."

I take a few steps into the room. Some tiny eyes turn to me, some keep on doing what they're doing. One of them, a tiny blue shinx, still crackling with electricity, pads up to me and puts one paw on my foot, almost like it's claiming me as much as I'm supposed to claim it. "Okay, so I'll take this one." I say.

"Perfect. What about another?" Willow leans against the door frame.

"Hmm..." I scan the room, searching for another possible companion. A mudkip turns to face me and tilts its head. "What about the mudkip over there?"

"Great choice! Here, go catch them." Willow hands me two Pokeballs to catch the Pokemon. After I - awkwardly - catch them, he leads me down the stairs back to the main entrance. "Alright, ready to go?"

Spark grins and nods. "Good to go!" I shrug and smile in agreement, then I wave bye to everybody else and set off on my adventure with a stranger I barely even knew. Crap.
