"Come on, Skulduggery, this isn't fair, let me in!"
"No."
"Why not?" Valkyrie whined.
"Because you hid my hat and now it's gone." He replied, with a slight edge to his voice.
"Oh get over it, I need to pee."
"Fine... Say please."
"What?"
"Say please."
"Skulduggery you can't lock me out, I have a key you know!"
"Then use it."
"I can't."
"And why ever not, my dear Valkyrie?"
"...Because I lost it." She growled back.
"And whose fault is that?"
"Skulduggery I'm serious, let me in now."
"Say the magic word."
"Abracadabra?"
"What? No, I meant please."
"Oh. But you said say the magic word. Please isn't a magic word. It's a rather dull word actually. Abracadabra is a magic word, though."
Skulduggery sighed and stood up, strolling over to the window. Casually, he pulled the curtains closed, smiled to himself, and went back to his armchair, picking up his newspaper.
"I hate you so much." Valkyrie spoke, with anger clearly dripping off ever word.
"No you don't."
"Yes I do."
"How can you not like me? I'm a very likeable person." Their conversations continued to be shouted through the door until eventually Valkyrie sighed and stood closer to the window.
"Fine. Please let me in."
"It's open." Valkyrie tried the door, which swung open happily.
"Are you freaking kidding me!"
"What? I never locked it. You just assumed I locked it when I told you I'd locked it. It's all about perception, really. You know, for a detective you're not very smart."
Valkyrie stared at him. Her gaze unwavering when he stood, stretched, and placed his newspaper on the coffee table in front of him.
"I sense you're slightly annoyed at me."
"Slightly."
Valkyrie was about to say something else when her thoughts were interrupted by Skulduggery's phone ringing.
"Hello... Get to the point Ravel...Of course... Oh... I see... Yes, I can see how that could prove a problem...we're on our way immediately ...what do you mean who's we, I'm with Valkyrie!... I do enjoy our conversations, Erskine...I'm hanging up now...Goodbye."
Skulduggery hung up the phone and walked out of his house, grabbing the keys for the Bentley on his way out. He slowly turned around when he realised that he wasn't being followed.
"Valkyrie?" He glanced around the room, and walked through to the kitchen. " Valkyrie?" Panicking a little, he took back out his phone and places it to his ear as- "Yeah I'm coming." Valkyrie shouted back, prancing down the stairs after almost tripping on the top step.
Skulduggery stopped, placing his phone back in his pocket. "Where did you go?" Skulduggery asked, while making sure she wasn't attacked or hurt.
Valkyrie frowned at him. "I told you outside, I needed to pee. Why? What did you think happened?"
"I don't know, I thought maybe you'd been attacked or something." She smirked at him.
"Aw, were you worried about me? Was the great Skulduggery Pleasant afraid that his partner had-"
"No I was not worried," Skulduggery interrupted, "Just annoyed at your punctuality. Ravel called. We need to be at the sanctuary. Come along."
They climbed into the car, when Valkyrie suddenly got back out, her eye catching something moving in the trees. "Wait here a sec." After disappearing for 5 minutes, she eventually came back and leaped into the car, smiling, clearly pleased with herself.
"I found your hat."
"Yes, I can see that."
Skulduggery took his hat back, and delicately placed it on his skull, angling it so that it dipped over his empty eye socket. He started the car and pulled out onto the road, passing the funeral homes on each side of him as he drove.
"Isn't a thank you in order? I mean, I did find your hat."
"Hmm? Oh, no I don't think so. It was you who lost the hat in the first place. The best I can do is give you a curtly nod." Skulduggery nodded at Valkyrie as they drove along the twisting roads ahead of them.
"I take it back," Valkyrie mumbled in reply, " I do hate you."
Skulduggery just chuckled to himself as he pulled out his phone and started to dial a number.
"Who're you calling?" Valkyrie asked, after angrily rage quitting her game of angry birds.
Skulduggery just grinned at her - which he did anyway since he's a skeleton - and pulled the phone away from his ear slightly to reply to her question.
" Well from what I've been told, our assignment is quite difficult. So I've decided I'm going to call in some old friends of mine to help us."
Valkyrie beckoned him to elaborate with her eyes.
"I'm calling in the cavalry."
He spoke with a stern voice, which made Valkyrie a bit nervous, just as they glided into the bubble, revealing the cold town of Roarhaven.
