My feet felt heavy as I tried to jump out of the hole which was filling with water up to my neck. I had no power to get out. I felt myself chained down to the ground, unable to swim my way to the top. I looked down and what I saw wasn't chains, but-
"Mrs. Thompson,"
Oh great. Not again.
My AP biology teacher looked down at me with his arms crossed.
"This is the third time this month that my class has bored you to sleep, if you cannot stay awake, I would suggest you take a lower level class where you can sleep and still pass." I nodded.
He sighed, taking the large textbook that he had dropped on my desk in hopes to wake me up.
I can't sleep at night. Yet it's so easy for me to fall asleep at the worst times throughout the day.
I sat through the rest of his lecture, not really getting much out of it at all, something about cells.
I just can't keep my mind from wandering.
Finally, the bell rings, releasing me from prison. I walk out, my feet clearly moving too fast for the rest of my body, I turn the corner and run head on with a boy I hadn't recognized before. I fall to the ground and he stumbles back a bit, but not falling over.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" He reached a hand down to help me up. I just kinda sat there, defeated, staring at the wall next to me. Not really wanting to stand back up, maybe if I stayed on the hallway floor I would be able to get out of my next class, AP calculus. Yuck. Sadly, reality isn't always so generous.
"Ahem," I heard the boy say... I was shaken out of my thoughts when he kneels in front of me, waving his hand in front of my face, trying to free me from my trance-like-state.
I snapped back to reality, smiling a little to reassure the dude that I wasn't crazy. I took his hand as he helped me up, people still swarming around us like ants, trying to get to their classes.
"I'm really sorry, I'm a klutz. It's kind've been quite an off-day for me." I said brushing my light brown hair behind my ear.
He smirked. And by smirked I mean smiled ear to ear. Like his eyes disappeared, I'm not even kidding, I've never seen a human being with such a cheeky smile before. I noticed a kind've emo-punk vibe from the way the guy was dressed, along with his gauges and nose piercing. But his huge smile and kind nature balanced him out.
"It's all on me, I totally wasn't paying attention," he said, obviously trying to make me feel better about the situation.
"I'm josh." He said, extending his hand for me to shake.
I shook his hand, smiling. "I'm Annika. And it's nice to meet you," I replied. "Are you new here?" Noticing a schedule in his hands, most likely meaning that he hadn't learned where and when his classes were yet.
He nodded. "Yeah, today's my first day. I just switched schools. I had been going to a private school, and things hadn't really been going well for me this year... so here I am, trying something new, and getting completely lost along the way." He laughed at himself as he explained.
I laughed along with him. "Well if you need any help finding your classes, I know this place like the back of my head," giving him an overdramatic smile.
"I might actually take you up on that offer, because I have absolutely no idea where this calculus class is," he said, looking at his paper.
A small wave of excitement hit me, "I'm headed to calculus right now, who's your teacher?" I asked.
"Um, Garret?" He read off.
"Awesome! I'm headed there right now anyways." I said excitedly.
He smiled, the really cheeky one I was telling you about earlier, you remember that one? Yeah. That one. "
Well, we should get going. I have a feeling we are both about to be la-"
And there went that annoying death sound. The school bell.
We looked at each other, both snickering on cue. I grabbed his arm and pulled him in the direction of calculus. Hoping that maybe, just maybe he would be normal enough to keep me sane.
If we even got that close to begin with.
If he let me....if I let him.
