If only this war never happened.
If only there was peace in the world.
That is what I contemplated every day, the reasons for this war always angered me.A silly man, blaming a group of people for a countries misfortunes.Father says it's insane, the jew's didn't make the currency in Germany worthless or drag down the countries name, back then everywhere was in a depression even America, even here.
Each day i think about poor innocent people, who are going to bed that night, and who won't wake up in the morning, all for the sake of one mad man with insane ideals.
The day begins at eight, father gets up and lights the fire, sweeping them beforehand if necessary, mother gets up and puts the teapot on the range, beginning to make breakfast.Hugo, my brother gets up from his room, and my sister Ava gets up from her bed across from mine, beginning to dress before she heads for the bathroom.
I can't get up straight away, I need time to wake up and stretch. After Ava comes back, getting her slippers on to head downstairs, I get up, dressing and then going to the bathroom for a wash and to brush my teeth and take my hair from the curlers I popped in last night, brushing the curls until they're fluffy and bouncy.I use as little hairspray as I can, we are in the middle of a war after all, and we can't afford to waste anything.
Today we get our ration books re issued, and that means mother will have to go into town and collect our allowance of food and supplies, we're low, it's hard for ships to get into the ports now, especially ports such as Dover, that are so closed to occupied France, and conveniently in the flight path of German aircrafts going to bomb London, and other places such as Plymouth, Liverpool and Birmingham.
The fear of the Luftwaffe is always imminent, the sound of the air raid sirens forever strike fear into everyone's hearts.
I could of left school by now, but I wanted to stay on, with the war, finding work is hard, so I thought I could make better use of myself in school, learning, and after the war, find a job.
Whenever my father went to work, that was always a scary time, he worked in a factory, he wasn't allowed to say what he did, the nature of his work, things like that, not even to his family, for fear of enemy spies gaining the knowledge, and the location, as if the factory was to be attacked, it could severely damage the war effort.
We all sit down for breakfast in the kitchen, the warmth of the fire and the aga keeping us cosy and snug in the coldness of February.Mother fetches the post and sorts through, opening a letter addressed to her presumably, her brows furrow as she reads it, and she taps my fathers arm, to get him to read it and they look at each other.
"Children....you know with the air raids getting closer, well...the council think it's in the best interest that the school closes its doors until after the war is over, they think that children in a school house is to much of a target.."
"But where will we finish school!?" Ava demands, she was clever, and could go far, which is why she was still in school even at 16.
"Well we could homeschool you?" Father suggests to which mother tuts.
"Robert that will work out expensive..." She looks at him.
"Annie you know that they need to go to school..if they need to be homeschooled, then we'll just have to manage, won't we?" He sighs.
Us three children look at each other.
"Well it suits me just fine.." Hugo shrugs to which my mother points at him.
"Oh no, don't you think you're getting away with that, you're going to be doing schooling, even if it is at my kitchen table!"
That was Hugo told.
That morning, after mother spoke to someone we knew on the council, it was confirmed that the school Ava, Hugo and myself attended, North Park secondary school, was to be shut as soon as possible.
So that very day, as a family we all set into town to get supplies for our new homeschooling regime.
We were all to take Maths, English Literature and Geography. But we could also choose to study History, a langue like Dutch or French, science, and anything else that interested us.
I chose to study history, and things like mythology, and to learn some Latin along with some Dutch and French.
We picked up pencils, pens, notebooks, some textbooks from second hand shops, and then also some other reading material, which were reasonably priced.
We went for lunch at a small cafe in town, and mother and father anxiously discussed how rationing could become even stricter, and imports could be stopped all together, and seeing as they weren't sure when the war would end, they would start buying us some summer clothes soon, while financially everything was a little more stable for the time being, as it could drop dramatically quickly and unexpectedly.
As we walked back home, my heart fluttered, because on the other side of the street, I saw Louis...
Of course Louis probably didn't know of my existence.
But my heart almost jumps out of my mouth when he calls out and begins to walk over to our side of the street...
What was going on?!...
