Second Chances

1. Fresh Start

I put the last pair of shoes that I'm bringing with me in the suitcase and zipped it up.

"Mommy can I pleaasee come with you?"

She was sitting in the middle of my bed pouting at me.

I smiled at her cute little face and shook my head. "I'm sorry mamas but no. You're too young."

She huffed and crossed her arms. "That's not fair."

I laughed before sitting on the bed and put her in my lap.

"Mommy will be back before you know it Avyana. And while I'm gone I'll FaceTime you ok?"

She held out her pinky. "Promise?"

I hooked my pinky with her little one. "I promise."

Placing multiple kisses on her face she laughed and I sat her back on the bed before getting up.

"Can I sleep with you again?"

I nodded. "Of course. We can watch a movie after you potty so get to it."

She hopped off the bed and went to the bathroom.

I sat the packed suitcase next to all my other ones and sighed. Tomorrow I'm going to be attending University of Florida. I transfered from Delgado in New Orleans when we moved to Florida for a fresh start.

I'm happy and everything but I just don't wanna leave my baby. Although I'm excited to be able to get to see what living on campus is like. Avyana will be staying with my mom, who moved out here too, while I'm away.

It was her idea for me to live on campus and get the full experience. Even though I told her it was ok because I know Avyana can be a handful at times she still insisted I go. I had Avy at 17 which was three years ago.

Her birthday is May 10th which is five days after mine, May 5th. She was truly a blessing because before her the doctor told me it would be hard for me to have children. So when we found out we were happy. We being her father and I.

My mom was a little disappointed at first because of the timing but she eventually came around and supported me like she does in everything I do. After me and him broke up a year after she was born my mom was always there to help.

He'd come and see her and make sure she had everything she needed nonetheless but we weren't on good terms. But we worked things out and I couldn't be more grateful that she got to see her dad on the regular.

Derrick is a great parent and he loves Avy to the moon and back. We even tried to make us work a couple times for the sake of our daughter but it always seemed to go downhill and plus he lives way in New York.

He owns one of the best tattoo shops out there so he would only stay for a few days at a time before heading back for work. So we just left it at a friendship. A complicated one.

"Mommy when is mawmaw coming?" Avy asked getting back in the bed.

"She's gonna be here to pick you up in the morning."

"Oh"

I gave her the remote to let her pick a movie on netflix.

"Pick one kiddo."

She moved closer to me and laid her head on my stomach while searching through the movies. To say she was only three she was fairly smart. So smart that the school she attends suggested I put her straight in kindergarten instead of preschool.

She picked the movie Boxtrolls and got under the covers. Halfway through the movie she was out. I kissed her forehead and put her head on a pillow. I checked the time and it was 9:28.
