But You Were There

When I came into this world,
I knew absolutely nothing.
I little bundle of curiosity,
Still trying to find my way.
But you were there, my sister.

That first bite of food
That I was spoon fed,
Was utterly disgusting.
A mushy mess of whatever.
But you were there, laughing.
My sister.

When I struggled
To take my first step,
And fell over again,
I felt myself picked up.
Because you were there, helping.
My sister.

On my first day of school,
Terrified, of what I'll face.
I ran into arms,
Who held me tight.
But you were there, comforting.
My sister.

I'm older now,
A teenager, trying to
blend in with the crowd.
Wanting someone, a friend.
But you were there. Loving.
My sister.

My heart was broken,
I felt unlovable,
Needing a shoulder to cry on,
A pillow to scream in.
But you were there. Calming.
My sister.

When I found the one
On my perfect day,
Tears of joy in my eye.
Walking down the aisle.
But you were there. Bridesmaid.
My sister.

I suffered pain,
And joy as well,
As I brought him in this world.
A bundle of curiosity.
Now I'll be there.
Mother.
