Chapter Two

I could barely sleep that night. Visions of my mother kept flooding my head. Paul throwing her against the wall, her precious body crumbling to the floor, motionless. My mother- the only person that ever cared for me, lying on the floor like a rock. I tossed and turned, sweat beading at my forehead. My hands clung to what used to be crisp white sheets. Rebbecca is dead... All at once I jolted up from my sleep, screaming at the top of my lungs. Warm tears ran down my cold cheeks and dropped onto my clenched hands. The shock of what had happened just a few hours ago was now sinking in. I could barely breathe, let alone speak. I was shaking, half out of anger and half out of anguish. Paul had killed my mother. That evil drunk, he killed her...

 Knock, knock, knock.

My head whipped to the door that was now slowly opening. I could barely see a thing, it was so dark. As my eyes began to adjust, two, very bright pink slippers peeked from behind the door. I thought it was Bettie, considering how I wouldn't expect Terry to be wearing pink fluffy slippers. But in the end, I found that my guess was incorrect, when a set of piercing green eyes made contact with mine. I stare at the girl who I remembered as Rhiannon. She stepped inside and shut the door carefully behind her.

"Rhiannon?" I whispered, sniffling quietly to myself. I watched as she tiptoed closer, giving me an advantage to see her more closely. Her red hair and pale face became evident as she stood in front of me. Worry was written all over her face.

"Yes, it's me. Are you alright?" She began, using the same tone of voice that I had just a few moments ago. "I heard you screaming loudly, and I came to see if everything was okay. Did you have a bad dream?" she asked, crossing her arms to no doubt preserve some warmth. I felt bad having her stand there in the freezing cold, so I motioned for her to come and sit on my bed.

"I'm fine. Yeah, it was just a bad dream." I replied, hugging my bear Zomphy, to my chest. Though that may have been childish, it comforted me in a way that I couldn't explain. Considering how fast the day had gone bye, I was acting rather calm. I had set fire to my school, my mother had died, Paul had thrown me into some freak show, and now I was to get along and create a new life here. I could only imagine how difficult that was going to be.

"If you don't mind me asking, what were you dreaming about?" Rhiannon asked, her big green eyes never leaving mine. I stared at at her porcelain face that looked almost pure white in the dark, before opening my mouth to speak.

"My mother..." I wasn't going to tell Rhiannon what had really happened, because I really wasn't ready to confide in anyone yet. Even though she was a nice girl, I barely knew her. And I couldn't trust her, at least not yet. "But it's nothing really. I always have dreams about her."

"She died?"

"Yes, she overused her abilities. She could create storms, and well, it didn't end too good. Ever since she died, I've had these dreams. And I really miss her..."

"Well I'm very sorry, Jasey. My parents died too, but when I wasreally young."

I gaped in disbelief. "How do you know my name? And what about Bettie and Terry? Aren't they your parents?"

Rhiannon shook her head slowly from side to side. "No, they took me in. After my parents had died I had no where to go. Most of my family was already dead anyways, and so I had no one. I guess you could say they adopted me. And I know your name because Bettie already told me. She likes you very much." She smiled gently at me, causing me to smile as well. Even though Rhiannon's news was tragic, it made me feel a bit better; I didn't feel so alone. It's always nice to have someone in your life to relate too and I could tell that Rhiannon was going to be that special person in mine. The one to comfort me and befriend me in my new surroundings. I liked her already, and I could tell that she and I were going to be good friends.
