chapter 1: wake up call
Alex
"Alex! Wake up, mommy told me you have to make me breakfast," a small voice said, pulling me out of my slumber.
I opened my eyes to see my baby sister, Avery. She was in first grade and still liked to wake up at six in the morning.
I had come home from collage last week and things at my house were pretty hectic in the mornings so I always help out. Avery and her twin brother Al were my half siblings. My seventh grade brother's name is Gabe and my other brother Collin is a senior in high school. Gabe, Collin, and I all share the same father. He left right before Gabe was born. I was seven and Collin was five. My mom remarried and gave birth to Avery and Al, and their father was the nicest man. Unfortunately, he died from a heart attack. After him I really had never trusted anybody except for family. I do, however, have a boyfriend and my best friend Savanna. Besides Savanna and Carter, my family is really the only people I keep in touch with. I don't want to go through the pain of losing anybody again.
"Alright," I groaned and got out of bed. "What are we having for breakfast today?"
"Toast!"
I sighed in relief. Toast was easy. Excitedly, she followed me down the stairs to the kitchen.
She sat on the stools by the island waiting for her toast. I only made one piece of toast for Avery and went right ahead and made two for Al. I spread the peanut butter over the three pieces of toast and served one to Avery. Eventually all at once Collin, Al, and Gabe made their way into the kitchen. I gave Al his breakfast.
"Toast? Can't they make their own fucking toast?"
"Gabe! Watch your language," I warned him.
"I can talk however the fuck I want to talk. "
"Okay, gabe, really. Watch your mouth," Collin jumped in.
"Whatever, dickhead."
I was just about to scold him when I heard Al's tiny voice speak up from the table.
"Dickhead!"
We all laughed before Collin warned him not to say that word.
"Gabe, you have to make Avery and Al's lunch."
"What? Why," he asked me in disbelief.
"If you want to have a pissy attitude towards me you can sure as hell go and make their lunch," I snapped.
"Okay, fine. But you can swear and I can't?"
"Gabe, I'm twenty-two. You're thirteen," I reminded him.
"Okay, mom," he said in a sarcastic tone.
We continued on with our usual morning routine. Collin went to school around seven and Gabe got picked up by his friend at seven thirty. Now it was just avery and al who were stuck with me until eight twenty, which is when I drive them to school.
"So you guys have a dentist appointment at lunch, okay?"
"Yay," Avery cheered.
Today was the day my mom would always fear. She would have to pick up all the kids from school and take them to the dentist. All four of them would have appointments. I offered to help out but she insisted I do something for myself for once. I agreed but told her to call me if she needed help. I decided I would take up on her suggestion and go out with savanna and Carter. We were going to go out to lunch and maybe come back here to my house to hang out more.
Soon enough it was eight twenty and I grabbed Avery and Al's backpacks and loaded them into my car. I dropped them off at school with two kisses and sighed in relief when they were all finally gone. Yes, I love my siblings to death but it does get tiring taking care of them.
