"Fiona!" shouted Hugh. I hurried over and stood beside the tunnel with him. "Look at this." His hand brushed over the wall, where a tangled mass of vines were covering some writing carved into the stone. Gingerly, I placed my hand over one of the vines and willed them to disentangle. I couldn't read very well or write but Hugh could make out most of the letters. I looked at him with a clueless expression and he gave one just as equally clueless. A flurry of 5 or so bees poured out his mouth and buzzed over to some flowers that were on death's door. "Let's have a look round. See what we can find."

I wandered over to an old heap of rubbish and kicked what appeared to be an old, rusted bike which broke apart. I walked around the edge of the tunnel and ran my hand along the wall to see if I could find something other than dead moss and long, winding vines. I stole a glance at Hugh who wasn't having very much luck either as he crouched beside some smashed up wood. The sun was gleaming over his face. I smiled to myself.
"Oi! You two there!" I jumped up and spun round to see an old man towing a cart of hay. "Wit do you think your doing over there? Just you wait till I get the peelers on you." The man looked up and down the nearby street. "Hey! Police!"
The police began jogging over. Hugh bolted to me and grabbed my sleeve. We sprinted down the tunnel dodging large rocks, fallen debris from the crumbling ceiling, large, overgrown shrubs and a huge rat that had crawled from under a bush. I winced and picked up the pace. We could hear there whistles from round the corner.
"We'll go out the other end, Fee. Hopefully they'll leave us." A bee furiously flew out Hugh's mouth and behind us.
We ran through the other end of the tunnel to be greeted by a large mansion by the looks of it.
"Dear god," exclaimed Hugh. "We're trespassing on a toff's house."

I heard a cry of despair from the side of the house. I dragged Hugh over to a tree his eyes still transfixed to the house. I yanked him down and conjured a few leafy vines to form a den around us.
"Come back, Claire!" Called a voice.
"It's almost supper." Came another. I peered through a gap in the leaves to see a boy, maybe ten years old, with sunken eyes and a girl with some of the biggest shoes I've ever seen on. I heard a giggle and spun round. A few bushes over I saw a mop of blond curls shaking. The two children turned round and ran towards the bushes. They began to crawl through them. Oh god.
"We're going to find you, Claire." Declared the girl with the shoes.
"Found you!" The boy exclaimed as he tore off the top of the shrub I had conjured. He screamed and stumbled backwards.

The girl walked over and shrieked. She ran back to the porch of the house. She was fiercely talking to someone and then began to walk over to us again frantically waving her hands. The boy was still standing above us to shocked to move. As the girl approached with a walking suit in tow he slowly walked over to them. I gasped and looked at Hugh. His mouth was hanging open. He'd seen the walking suit too.
"Stand." Commanded a voice. I think it came from the bloody suit. Terrified and trembling I stood. I looked at Hugh and he copied. The boy had stopped shaking like a leaf and held himself with some confidence.
"Follow us." He said. I glanced at Hugh and he began striding behind the girl as the two boys took up the rear. The little girl opened up the huge door and told us to stay. The boy and the suit lounged on a sofa beside a table of trinkets. Hugh touched a small cup on the table and it toppled over. He quickly picked it up and I slapped his arm.
"Sorry." He muttered and he hiccuped a bee up but quickly swallowed it back down.

I watched Hugh's eyes dart around the hallway we were standing in. They suddenly stopped and I followed his gaze to the top of the stairs. A woman was standing in a white frock. Her black hair was tightly pulled back against her scalp and her lips were covered with a slick coat of red lipstick. Her eyes were stormy and her expression grim. Her face then broke into a smile.
"Welcome to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children." She beamed.
