Identity Crisis

Dean waited anxiously as Death touched his hand to Sam's forehead. He has no idea why there horseman had decided to help him, and wasn't going to press his luck speaking, but the wait was driving him crazy. After severally tense moments, Death spoke.

"Interesting" he said, not moving his hand. Still, Dean held himself back, just barely controlling his urge to speak. Then Death turned to him.

"You're in luck,"he stated "it seems that the archangel Gabriel hid a little piece of his grace in your brother before he died. It hasn't been doing anything so far, but I can use it to strengthen the wall, if you agree to let me. Of course, there will be consequences. "

Dean glared at him suspiciously. "What kind of consequences?"he asked. A stronger wall sounded good, considering it was all that stood between Sammy and a mental breakdown, but he didn't want to accept a deal that would ultimately make things worse.

Death looked at him for a moment, almost as if he knew what Dean had been thinking (which he probably did) before explaining. "Until now, Gabriel's grace had been cut off from the rest of Sam's mind. This would connect them. The piece of grace would start calling to others that are scattered around the world, and those would come and add to it. This process would... for lack of a better word, merge Sam and Gabriel together. Sam would still be Sam and Gabriel would still be dead, but certain abilities, memories and personality traits of Gabriel's would pass to Sam. The amount would increase as the amount of grace inside did."

Dean thought about it for a moment. Yes, this sounded pretty messed up, and he really didn't need anyone playing with Sam's personality, but it didn't sound horrible, and the wall was important. Whatever changes Sammy would go through, they were most definitely better than insanity. He thought about it for another minute before turning to Death and saying 

"Agreed."
