Maybe, when Sesshomaru and Inuyasha were children, they didn't hate each other as much as they do. Maybe Inuyasha considered Sesshomaru his role model, and maybe Sesshomaru would have done anything to keep from disappointing his little brother. Maybe, just maybe, Sesshomaru saw his half-demon sibling as someone to be protected, not despised, and maybe he would have tried to keep him safe, from anyone.
