Introduction

Jay's POV

"What do you mean we're Leaving?" I asked as my mom was packing my things.

"Jay I have no time to explain. Your father wants us out by 3:30." She cried.

My mom is a very beautiful women. She was married to my father. John Hunter. He wasn't a very respectable man to my mom.

Every time me and my sister Emily would come home we would see her crying in the kitchen. She always thought she was good a lying and keeping her crying a secret, but we knew. We just lied back so she wouldn't know that we knew about their arguments, and my dads very short temper. The worse part is I never told my mom it happened to me too. She saw the bruises on my stomach and I lied. I told her it was a skating accident. I could never face my dad the same way.

"But mom what about Emily?!?" I asked grabbing her hands. She was shaking. It was like she was scared for her life.

"She's going to stay here. With your father." She said avoiding eye contact with me. "She'll be fine. I promise." She said as her voice cracked. She wouldn't stop packing. "We just need to get all you stuff in these boxes and be out of here before your da..."

"MOM STOP!!!!" I yelled. She stopped for a brief second then looked at me, "What's going on?" I said moving closer to her. She started crying.

When she started crying she fell to the floor. It was like she was letting all the pain and fear go for the first time. I sat on the floor across from her and wrapped her in my arms. She felt so much fear. So much pain. This was the worse state she has ever been in. I couldn't help but tear up while holding her. But I have to stay strong. For her.

"Mom," I said letting her go, "Will you please explain why we have to move?" She looked weak and frail.

"Me and your Father got into a huge argument about taking care of you guys," she paused before taking a deep breath, "I told him that you guys were precious and didn't deserve to be treated the way he treated me. He got angry and punched me." She said looking at the ground. "He told me he will do whatever he wants, and that's when I snapped. I told him I couldn't do this any more. I wanted to leave. That's when he threw his beer bottle at the wall next to me and told me to be out by the time he gets home. He wanted to keep your sister and get rid of you. So I offered to take you. That's why we have to leave." She said getting up off the ground.

"Mom why didn't you tell me?" I said standing up. I walked towards my bedroom door and leaned against the door frame.

"I was worried we wouldn't be a family. I want you to be happy and be able to show all your friends what a great father you have." She said taking a box down stairs.

"But he's not a good father and you know it!!! We can't leave Em here with him. It's too dangerous." I said following her with a box in hand.

"Well what do you expect me to do Jay. I only have enough money to take care of the both of us." She said setting the box down in the U-Haul. "Besides he promised not to touch her if I'd take you with me." She said looking at me.

"Mom..."

"Jay enough!!!! We just need to pack everything and figure everything else out later ok?!?!" She yelled as she walked back into the house.

I was furious. I have to leave my baby sister, the one I'm supposed to protect, with an abusive alcoholic father. How am I going to tell her this. She's only 10 years old.

"Jay?" A small voice said. I turned around and saw Emily standing at the U Haul. "What's going on?" She asked with her backpack in her hands.

"Hey Em," I said setting the box down, "Why don't we go talk inside huh?" I said picking her up and carrying her to her room

-Fast forward to after Jay explains what's happening-

"You mean you're leaving me?" She said crying. "But who's going to brush my hair and pick out my clothes for me?" She said hugging me.

"Well Em it's time for you to start doing that now. You're getting older and you have to learn how to do things on your own." I said hugging her back. I couldn't hold the tears back anymore. So I let it all out.

"But I don't want to!!!!" She yelled.

"I know sweet heart but you have to for now. I'll be back for you I promise!! When I turn 18 next year and get a job I'll come get you. We can live on our own in a big fancy apartment, how does that sound?" I said pulling back so I could see her face.

"Really?" She asked letting go.

"Yeah. It'll be beautiful." I said wiping her tears away.

"Ok." She said sniffling.

"GIRLS COME HELP ME PACK THE THINGS!!! YOUR FATHER WILL BE HOME SOON!!" My mom yelled from across the hall.

"Here, mom got you a phone so you can be able to call us. I already put everyone's numbers in so it's all ready to go." I said handing her her new phone.

"Thank you Jay!!" She said hugging me tightly.

"GIRLS!!!"

"Come on. Let's go pack." I said walking out the room while holding her hand.

-Fast forward to when Jay and her mom are leaving-

I hugged my sister so tight. I couldn't take it anymore. So I broke down into tears. I was leaving her behind. I couldn't help to bring myself to let her go.

"You promised you would protect me Jay!!" She said crying even harder than me.

"I still am Em. Don't worry." I said letting her go.

"It's time for you to go James." My dad said grabbing Emily away from me.

"It's Jay" I said grabbing my last bag.

"Whatever." He said taking another sip of his beer.

I walked to the truck and threw my bag in the back seat. When I got into the passenger seat I heard Emily scream at me.

"I LOVE YOU SISSY!!!"

"I LOVE YOU TOO EMILY!!!" After that my mom started to drive. I looked out the window and saw my sister chasing the car till we got to the end of the street. After we turned the corner I could no longer see my sister. She was gone.

I did nothing but cry all the way to California.
