"Can I sit here?"
"No."
"Well, you're SOL, because I'm sittin' here anyway."
She sat down across from you.
"How's it goin'?"
"..."
"Good? Ah, me too." She pulled out a lunch bag.
"..."
"Mom packed me a sandwich today, want half?"
She offered you a half of a ham sandwich. You looked her in the face, about to reject it, but realized that a half of a sandwich is better than slop, so you took it. You studied her appearance. She had light brown hair, with two fading blue streaks framing her face. Her eyes were dark-ish blue, and she had a little bit of acne. She was kind of pudgy. Her nametag read 'K█████████, Margaret' and underneath that was the word 'Anomalous Artist'.
"Soooo... Did ya like it?"
You nodded your head without thinking.
"Ok, I'll ask Mom to make me another one tomorrow. My name's Maggie, what's yours?"
"Y/N," you answered.
"Cool. I also got some chips if you wanna share those?"
"Whatever," you replied blankly.
Maggie opened the chip bag and gave you half of its contents. Secretly, you were happy that you didn't have to eat the gray slop that the Foundation's... "cooks"... put on your plate.
"So... If you're a scientist or whatever, what are you doing here?"
"Me?" She cocked her head. "I ain't no scientist. I'm an artist."
"Oh."
"They put me here as a helper for one of the skips. He doesn't have a leg to stand on, so I have to cart him around everywhere."
After a while of chatting, the lunch bell sounded.
"I gotta go, I'll see ya later," Maggie said as she was packing up.
"Smell you later, nerd."
"Hey!" Maggie crossed her arms in mock offense as she left. She waved at you once more, and exited the cafeteria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Timeskip to After Classes~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Worst. [EXPLETIVE]. Day.
EVER.
Your eyes were watering from boredom. What kind of school was this? It was just a bunch of sadsacks giving motivational speeches!
You flopped onto your uncomfortable, cold mattress. What more were you going to get out of this dumb school other than a wasted day? Well, a wasted day is better than [DATA EXPUNGED], at least. You figured that much. And hey, lunch isn't half bad either. You get a sandwich tomorrow. A full sandwich. Better than that [EXPLETIVE] they give to the other inmates. And you had someone you could chat with. Maybe this school isn't all that bad. Aside from the sadsacks giving their boring-as-hell speeches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Next Day~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I hope you're enjoying that sandwich."
You looked up at Maggie in confusion. She gave you your sandwich, as promised, and a little bag of chips to go with it. Was this the only one she'd give you or something?
"What?"
She leaned in close to you, as if to tell you a secret.
"I kinda overheard a convo between some of the higher-ups. Please don't tell anyone, or they'll either terminate me and you, or send me back home with a boot to the seat of my pants... and then terminate you. So, it doesn't work out for either of us if you say anything." You nodded in approval. This secret sounds important.
"I heard that you're going to be working with SCP-076-B today. You know, Able. The super-powerful Sumerian warrior-"
"Yeah, I know him..." You casually said as your stomach bottomed out within you. "When... does that start?"
"Right after lunch."
You felt like you were going to lose your lunch. You sat back down on your lunch table bench, pondering all of your life decisions. Maggie piped up again;
"Wanna know what they assigned to you?"
"I already know. They gave me Able."
"No, like, wanna know what kind of things you are going to be doing with Able?"
"Not really, but lay it on me."
"They said that they thought, from observing Able's research records, that he was... Ya know... frustrated."
"Isn't he always-"
"No no no, not like that... like, um, frustrated in matters of romance. In other words, they think he needs a girlfriend in order to calm down. So either you're going to get the most powerful boyfriend in the world, or he'll leave you completely alone if he doesn't like you. If he manages to hurt you, they'll blow him off the face of the earth, and he'll have to wait another six hours to 25 years to find love."
Your lunch settled down immediately, and you almost blushed. But just as your food was digestible again, the lunch bell rang. Maggie was packing up her lunch bag as she whispered;
"Good luck. *wink*"
You breathed in and out, preparing yourself.
And you heard the announcement:
"D-9342, D-9457, D-8544, and D-(your number), please report to cell 076 at this time."
You stood, bracing yourself for either the best or the worst.
