"Eva!" I shot up yelling. I immediently got a rush of pain to my temple.
"Shh Jordan I'm right here. Don't move, okay? You hit your head, hard."
"Eva, where's mom?" I sat up, ignoring the pounding in my head. Her eyes teared up and she put her head down.
"I," she paused trying to form her words, "I don't know. So much happened yesterday. A wave took down the tree she was holding onto." She broke out into tears and wrapped her arms around me.
"Eva," i pulled her closer to my chest and wrapped my arms around her in a cradling form. "Eva look at me." She slowly raised her head until our eyes met. She was only six, and she was going through so much, emotionally and physically. "Evangeline, we're going to get out of here, and we're going to find mom. I promise." She looked down and nuzzled into me.
"What should we do now?" She croaked.
"Well, I say we search this building for clothes, food, and any other people who might be here aswell. Do you know what road this is. If the water isn't too deep we can try to make our way to higher ground."
"I'm not sure..." she paused. "There was a man clinging onto a road sign. I only could read half of it. It was bent in half." She took a deep breath. "I think it said 'Alb'. I hope it was that."
"Alb?" I stopped to think. "Albert! The shopping center should be around the corner. We can check the second floor there for food. Canned and bagged only though, the rest could be contaminated."
"Whats that mean?" She questioned.
"Dirty from the water and the things that are in it."
"Oh, that's not good is it?" She had started calming down.
"No, it's very bad. Come on, lets search this house." She went to stand up, but winced. I looked down at her leg. She had a wet towel wrapped around it. It was stained red with blood. "Eva, why didn't you tell me about your leg?"
"Oh that? It's not bad, i swear!" I removed the towel. She had a gash torn in her leg. "I don't know how or when i got it. It was definitely after you passed out in the water though.
"Alright stay here, I'm going to look for some bandages."
"No! I'm coming with you! Please don't leave me alone, I'm scared!" She started to tear up again.
"Alright come here." She calmed down and i picked her up bridal style. I walked to what seemed to be a kitchen first. I put Eva on the counter. She sat up as I began to look around. I opened some cabinets that were molding from the water. There was nothing besides some pots and canned food. I put the food on the counter so I could return to it once i found a bag of some sorts. "Come here," I notioned to my sister. She scooted closer and I lifted her up again, "Grab those cans. You carry them until I find a bag, we can't have people taking them." She nodded and grabbed the cans of vegitables and Progresso soups.
I began walking down a hallway when i spotted an entrance to a bathroom. "Jackpot." I quietly stated to myself as i propped the door open as best i could. I opened the medicine cabinet and found some bandages. I handed them to Eva and i set her on a baby changing table. I lifter her leg up and unwrapped the towel on her calf. I grabbed the bandaged and the gauze pads. I opened up a cabinet beneath the sink and found some cleaning solution for wounds. I poured some onto the gauze and placed it to her wound.
