Sounds of yelling filled the house then it suddenly all stopped. A young boy lays in bed trying to block out the image of his drunk father standing over his mother's unconscious body; but he's witnessed it too many times to forget.

His head rests on a pillow soaked with tears, as he curls into a ball on the bed. A hand suddenly grips his shoulder making him jump. Squeezing his eyes shut, he thinks to himself "it's my turn to get beaten now."

"Floyd it's ok it's just me." His older brother's voice surprises Floyd. He wraps his arms around me and wipes the tears from my face. He's the closest thing to a real father I've ever had.

I hate my father. He is an alcoholic who hurts us and expects the very best from Edward and I. Mostly Edward though because he is the golden boy of our family.

"I can't take it anymore Eddie. The kids at school keep asking me why I have so many scars and bruises."

"I know Floyd. Don't worry. It will all be over soon I promise. Just try to go to sleep."

I shut my eyes and let my brother hold me until I fall asleep.

I wake up to the smell of liquor and blood. I shoot up out of bed and gaze at the floor. My father lays on the floor unconscious with blood dripping from his nose and Edward standing above him with his hand in a fist.

"E-eddie? W-what did you do?"

"Floyd let's go. Follow me."

"Where are we going?"

"Shhhh just be quiet." He leads me out of my room and down the stairs to the back yard. "Get in the boathouse it's safe in here."

I do as I'm told and walk in. Before I know what's happening Edward slams the door behind me and locks it.

"Edward what are you doing?!? Let me out!"

"I'm sorry Floyd, but I promised you it would be over soon and I don't want you to witness our father's death."

"What? No please don't! Edward come back!" He runs off to the house leaving me alone in the boathouse.

He can't do this. It will ruin him, having to carry the burden of taking a life. I won't let him do this. I need to get out of here.

I spot a brick on the ground and throw it through the window. Before leaving I take my father's hunting rifle. All the windows and doors of the house are sealed shut. I can't get in. A bang goes off from inside the house causing my breathe to hitch.

Oh no. He's already done it. I'm too late. I can't see either it's too dark. I climb up a tree in the backyard to get a better view. I can see them now through the window. Edward is reloading. Now is my chance to shoot the gun out of his hands.

Deep breath. One. Two. Thr- suddenly the tree branch snaps and I fall to the ground while pulling the trigger. A scream comes from inside the house causing my stomach to churn.

The next few days are a blur. I had missed my brother's gun and shot my brother right between his eyes causing him to die instantly. My father lives, but he's paralyzed thanks to the one shot Edward took at him.

My mother seems even more depressed. Edward was the only person she ever truly loved. She kept the murder a secret to protect the family name.

I killed the only person who I looked up to. The only one who was there for me. The one family member who cared for me. By killing my brother I saved my father's life.

A few years later my mother couldn't handle the depression anymore so she committed suicide leaving me alone with the man I hate most in this world until I went off for military school.

I was made a sniper and made sure I never missed a shot again.
