"Hey carter have you seen a shoe box?" My mom screams. I'm just sat on my bed drawing in my sketch book. No. I scream. "Will you go look under my bed?" My mom screams. On it. I reply. I get up, close my sketchbook and put my pencil on it. I get up and walk down the hall to my parents room.
As I get on the floor I do see a cardboard box. I start to pull it out. I was right it was a cardboard box but not the shoebox. It was something else, something mysterious. The box was black. And on a silver piece of duct tape there is DO NOT OPEN wrote in red sharpie. Well I had to open it. There was a list that read "MISSING PEOPLE (since 1994)" That's my birth year. As I scan through the list there's my name Carter Miller. I fold the list and put it in my pocket, I look through all these notes, just to find my picture at the bottom. As much as I'd like to read the notes I don't have time. But they don't get to keep this from me. That's it I'm a grown adult. I shove my picture and list in my pocket, and pick up the box. "Why are you in here, you know you're not supposed to be in here." My dad yells. Well first off mom told me to look under here for something and second off YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO KEEP THIS FROM ME, AND THIS WHOLE RELIGION THING IT'S A LIE, JUST LIKE YOU AND MOM. I MEAN YOU AND KAREN. YA'LL AREN'T MY REAL PARENTS! I run to my room while holding the box as tightly as I could. I grabbed my chore money. Then I ran all down the hallway to grab the extra phone my dad never knew he had. I run back to my room to get my oversized plain black hoodie, extra socks, my goldfish bag, sketch book and pencil bag. Then got out my big zebra striped backpack and put all my stuff in it. Then put the hoodie on, put the phone in my other pocket, the opposite one from the list and picture. I run down the hall and all the way to the front door. Tears are streaming down my face. My parents are in their room screaming about how my mom forgot and so on. My cat comes over to me. Hi Billy. I keep petting him over again. I do this side smirk but then lose it and breakdown into tears. I pick up Billy, get up off the ground and just stare at the door. I can't believe this, I'm about to go outside for the first time. "You better not even think about going outside." My dad says in a angry tone. I turn around to see both of my "who they call themselves parents" just a few feet away from me. Oh ya watch me.
I unlock all the locks, put my hand on the doorknob, take a deep breath and open the door. I go outside and slam the door behind me. I run before they come chasing me. I don't even think about where I am, where I'm going, or what the outside world looks like. All I can think of is how heavy everything is. I finally get out of the woods, and away from those weirdos. Our house was in the middle of the woods, glad I didn't know that earlier. Well if I'm missing, I guess I should put my hoodie on. There's a bench and a large green sign with a red bus on it. After about ten minutes there's this big bus who pulls up and the doors open. I get up and pick up Billy. I'm never putting that box down I think to myself as I walk up the stairs. I go to the back and find a seat. There is this sweet looking lady sitting at the back of the bus. Hi my name is um Carly. And I'm new around here do you know where this bus goes. "Names Caroline. And yes this bus takes us to maple street." She says in a accent. Ok thank you much! Doors open. Well here goes nothing come on Billy. I go down the steps and make sure Billy is still following me. I first see a Walmart, I run in and buy a $7 wagon. I walk outside of Walmart, take off my backpack and put it in there along with Billy. But not the box, I'm gonna keep holding that box. Across the street there was a Calots Motel. I pull the wagon handle and cross the street. I walk through the automatic doors. These are so cool, I don't have to struggle to turn a door knob. Ok come on carter I mean Carly play it cool.
The front desk was empty. But something grabbed my attention "CARTER MILLERS GONE SINCE 1994" with my picture. It was in the newspaper sat on the front desk. Somebody looks over at me and comes behind the desk. "Can I help you?" A very tall guy asks in a tiredly voice. Um actually yes can you call a taxi for me? He picks up the phone so I assume that's what he's doing. About 10 mins later a taxi pulls up. Thank you sir. No reply. I get in the taxi with the wagon and box. Police station please. We arrive. I give him the $10 I owed him for the ride. I opened the taxi, got out the wagon and the box still in my hand. I stand at the police station and stare at it. I turn around and the taxi is gone. Well here goes nothing time to say who I really am and turn myself in. I took a deep breath and walked in.
