Dark magic is strictly forbidden.
That is an absolute rule within the Mage Academy.
Every mage-in-training learns that during their first day in the Academy. Even when they graduate and become part of the Academy as mages, that rule gets burned in their minds.
With that rule, mages are taught how to track, and apprehend, dark mages within the continent of Majorca, where the nations of Alaste, Calistor, Edragor, and Runeterra are located. The only safe place for dark mages, it seems, would be in the Empire of Mortalis, where dark magic is their specialty.
The Mage Academy sends out a team of mages to capture rogue mages found within Majorca. Once captured, the captive mage is given a choice: have his or her mage abilities removed or be given the punishment of death. Most face death, as the knowledge of their mage abilities being removed is a fate worse than death, as they say. The law is harsh, some might say. But that is the law. And it is imposed in the entire continent.
