Paige Harrell hated Penn Hurst. From its big, black iron doors right down to its spiderwebs, she believed it was a nuisance. Then again, she also hated the patients that lived inside it.
Paige merely did this out of spite, for she did not believe these beings could possibly be human. As she walked the empty corridors and listened to the violent screams, she passed a familiar character, Rosie Shafer.
Rosie Shafer was possibly the nicest person in the asylum. She helped the deranged make their way to and from their rooms, she played with the babies left as orphans because of their misshapen anatomies, and she spoon-fed the psych patients that twitched at every moment.
Rosie and Paige barely talked, but Paige hated her for her niceness. 'She's too nice. She's needs to be taught some discipline and attitude. Maybe then she'll get a man,' Paige often thought to herself. Whether there was a nail in her foot or a splinter in her tongue, Rosie always had a smile on her face.
This particular morining, Paige was very frustrated. She had not gotten her amount of sleep needed to proceed with the day. And it didn't help that her favorite blouse secreted a stain underneath one of its folds. Unfortunately ately, she took this out on Rosie. "That slut'll get hers," she mumbled under her breath. As she walked into the corridor to look at her jobs for the day, she noticed that Rosie got to take care of the children while she had to be in the psych ward. While no one was looking, Paige switched name tags with Rosie and placed herself with the children.
Later in the day when she went to relieve her paycheck, Paige noticed a gurney rolling down the hallway towards an ambulance. Johnson Penn Hurst, founder of Penn Hurst Asylum, stared over Paige's shoulder. "She's gone... lost in a world of tormented souls." Paige jumped at the mere sound of the sullen voice. "John, how did this happen?" Johnson shook his head and recalled what he heard from down the hall. A scream and a loud banging noise, this was what was left of the evidence. "I swear, I thought I had put her with the children..." John shook his head as his eyes filled up with tears.
The evidence quite clearly shows that John was in love with Rosie. He loved her so much, that he was going to propose to her the next day. This, unfortunately, was wasted on mourning her death and drinking scotch from dusk until dawn each day. "I know who did this. Jim had something to do with this violent death, I just know it."
Jimmy Cherish, the supposed murderer of Rosie Shafer, was a patient in the psych ward. He was known for violent attacks towards women. Strangely enough, Paige once loved him. Before he went insane, Jimmy was in the military. He was out fighting a terrorist group when a bomb exploded near him. He was left with severe brain damage and would have died if it were not for the expertise of several doctors in the area.
As the ambulance drove away, Paige saw the desperation on Johnson' face. She watched as he silently stalked around the corner. She heard him enter a side room inside the psych ward and slam the door shut. PAGE flicked as the sound of a gunshot rang through her ears.
