Rose Pov
The klaxon sounded out telling us it was time to go. Time to choose our new lives. I finished up fixing my hair and packed my running shoes into a bag along with trousers and a top I took from my cousin. I called out to my father that I was leaving.
No hug. No goodbye. He just stood there staring at me. "I want you to come back here at the end of today. Basically because you won't survive in any other faction." I step back knowing what his reaction will be from my next words.
"I was gonna transfer to Erudite, you know, get to know the faction mom was in." He glares at me before striking my face sending prickles of pain through my head. Great now that's going to bruise.
"Get the fuck out of here. Now." I quickly wipe tears from my eyes and speed out the door grabbing my bag and head towards the centre of town. I'm gonna transfer. There is no way I'm going back there. Maybe I could go to Amity ? They're peaceful.
Or maybe I could go to Erudite. Become smart and cunning. I could never make it in Candor so that's not an option. But then there's Dauntless. I could transfer there and become stronger, then no one would hit me and I could protect myself if they do.
I break out of my thoughts at the sound of whoops and yells. I turn and see the Dauntless speeding through the town all in black. Laughing and joking about. I want that. I want to feel safe and happy. I know what I'm going to do. I smile at my decision.
I turn back in my spot in the line and I'm met with a couple of stares. Shit. The bruise. "What is it?" I say softly to the person closest to me who raises their hand and gingerly touches my face. I flinch at the touch. "What happened ?" I glance at the floor before speaking.
I raise my head and look up plastering a fake smile on my face. "Oh it nothing I tripped on my way here." One girl in black and white clothes beside us narrowed her eyes at me. "No you didn't. I saw you walk up here." For fuck's sake of course she's Candor.
"No I really did. I tripped over my doorstep and ended up ripping my dress. It was soo embarrassing,-" a guy in front of me turned around. "We get it your not telling us why you have a big noticeable fist shaped bruise on your face." My heart skipped a beat until his face relaxed. He smiled at me and held out his hand. "Cameron. You are ?"
I swallowed my fear and held out my hand smiling. "Rose. Nice to meet you." The line jolted forward as people started filling up the hall. Once we were registered we filed into our seats and waited for the ceremony to begin.
Jeanine the woman in charge of erudite, steps forward and launches into a huge speech while waiting g for the rest of the stragglers to filter in. One of those people were my father. My breath caught in my throat as he made his way in my direction, stumbling occasionally.
Great. He's fucking drunk. He sits down in a seat near me and smiles evilly. People reel away from him in obvious digust. Once Jeanine finishes her speech she start to call out names and I get nervous as it'll be my turn soon.
I squirm in my seat as my name gets closer with each name that is called. Robin Hornby, Daniel Hussel, Cassava Ivano, Katarina Jennes, Benjamin Kana.
I watch as one by one they either choose to go back home to loving families or join a new one in their chosen faction. My heart is beating wildly as one by one my row of people dwindle. Harry Langford, Irena Lennox, Cameron Levine. I watched as Cameron stood up and winked at me before making his way down to the bowls. He stood in silence like those before him did and picked up the knife, slicing his hand and letting the blood fall over the hot coals of dauntless.
I look over at his parents who unlike my father are actually happy for him. I'm next. I feel like I'm going to collapse. "Rosalie Martin". My breath catches in my throat as I slowly stand up and make my way to the bowls. On my way down I hear gasps and whispers as I flinch passing my father, who stares at me his message clear behind his eyes. His gaze flickers to the big bruise on my face and he smirks.
Once I'm finally at the bowls it's as if time stands still. I know I have to leave him. Before he kills me. I close my eyes as I pick up the knife and open them looking at Jeanine who looks at my face observing the bruise.
I cut into my hands gasping at the stinging, biting pain and clench my fist together before holding my hand over my chosen bowl.
The coals sizzle as my blood comes into contact with them and I suppress a smile. I look up to Jeanne who proudly announces "Dauntless." I make my way over to them only to be stopped by a shout of anger.
"YOU BITCH. AFTER EVERYTHING I'VE DONE FOR YOU, YOU LEAVE ME BEHIND. NO, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DAUNTLESS. YOU'RE COMING HOME WHERE I'M GONNA GIVE YOU WORSE THAT'LL MAKE SCARS LOOK LIKE NOTHING.!"
My father screamed at me while being restrained and dragged out of the room. I stood still the silence dragging out, not knowing what to do or say. I was frozen with fear, absolutely petrified. Tears threatened to spill over but I wouldn't let them. Someone came close, too close and I certainly and very visibly flinched.
I turned to everyone and shakily said an "Excuse me." Before walking calmly out of the room. Once I heard Jeanine apologise and carry on with the ceremony I rounded a couple corners slid down a wall.
I then stood up and let my anger out. I punched the wall until my knuckles where bloody and numb. I said "Why? Why, me ?" Over and over again like a mantra. Cursing i flexed my mangled hands, wiping the blood off them and ripping and tying up my dress to try and make them presentable, I made sure no one was looking before I changed into a grey top I stuffed in my bag last night thankful I was smart enough to make sure that covers everything I want hidden and hastily pull the grey trousers (AN basically grey jeggings) that fit okay. I discard the dress in a bin and head back it the room slipping into a seat beside a black clad man with a ginger beard.
He took in my appearance and nodded. "Welcome to dauntless kid. Sorry 'bout what happened but you're here now and looks like you were prepared. I'm Levi" I nodded slowly staring straight ahead.
"Well you could say I had no choice. I had to leave. I'm Rose." He nodded slowly again, he stared at me a bit more his eyes taking in the bruise and flicking over my face. "That guy was outta control you know shouting at you like that and making that threat, you know him ?" I turned to look at him knowing my face showed no emotion. "He was my father and he's done a lot worse that threaten me."
Levi's eyebrows arched before he stood up. He offered me his hand and I took it shouldering my bag. He gripped my hand and I winced. "Sorry Rose, it's just - what the fuck happened to your hands?" I ripped them from his grasp. "I did it. It's fine. Plus I've dealt with worse." I looked around seeing people starting to filter out with the occasional flicker of a stare in my direction.
"Now then Levi, do I follow you or ?" His expression flickered before he smiled briefly standing up. "Yea kid follow me." He said before running out the door that leads to my new life.
*Time lapse to the ledge*
After climbing up things, running non stop, jumping onto trains and jumping back off them, I was wrecked. All the initiates me included were gathered at a ledge listening to some guy with piercings who looked scary. But hot.
He talked through what jobs the dauntless had like guarding the wall, being police etc. I tuned out for a lot of it but tuned back in when he was nearly finished. "We don't pick fights we win them okay ? But it looks like the stiff ignored that rule." I felt his gaze burn into my face and I slowly looked up trying not to show anything. Scattered giggles through the group made me hang my head.
"Right initiates who's going first." Everyone fidgeted and shifted uncomfortably. I looked about and pushed my way through the group. "I will." The guy looked at me. "Aren't you gonna ask what's down there stiff ?" I shook my head. "I don't care." His eyebrow raised and he smirked. "You have balls stiff." I turned away from him. "Course I do, otherwise I'd be dead." And I jumped.
The wind soared and rushed through my hair. As soon as it started it stopped as I plunged into a very large net. Once I'd bounced a few times the net was pulled to the side and I tumbled off.
"First jumper." I tensed at the voice as I stood up. "Rose. My names Rose." I looked up to see Tobias smiling. "I know. Welcome to dauntless " I catch him looking at the bruise before moving over to the side.
One by one people fly down, the net catching them. Once everyone has jumped we made our way through the compound and met Tris. She eyed me before saying. "Welcome to dauntless, initiates. Dauntless born go with Sara. The rest of you come with me."
