"Red! Are you feeling any better today?", five of the boys crowded around me with the exception of Yugyeom, who seemed to be avoiding me like the plague, and, you guess it, Jaebum. Not surprising. Or at least it wouldn't have been if it weren't for yesterday. After the whole ordeal, I half expected him to grow a heart overnight.
I remembered I had been dead set on thanking him last night, but approaching him now seemed to give me second thoughts. It wasn't like I was intimidated by him or anything. I wasn't ready to let him win yet. Just the thought of me being pressed up against his chest, being carried back to my place like I couldn't fend for myself was enough to make my blood boil. He had probably thought he won.
After I spent about five minutes assuring the rest of them I was alright, and they had moved on to better things, I discretely began inching my way over to Jaebum. I was about to open my mouth to say something, but my phone rang, in turn blowing my cover and startling a few of the guys for a split second. And then there was Jackson who practically jumped a mile.
"Sorry," I said abruptly, as I looked at the caller ID. I sighed. "I should take this. You guys just do your thing." I went to go take my call out in the hall. I closed the door and the muffled sound of squeaky shoes and music echoed slightly in the hallway.
"Dad? Why are you calling now?" I didn't bother with formalities. He rarely called, especially in the middle of the day like this.
"I just wanted to check up on my only daughter and see how she was doing. Is that a crime?", he asked.
"Well, I'm good.", I said slowly. "The question is are you okay?"
He laughed. A very artificial one at that. "Yes, I'm fine. How's the job?"
"It's good...", I started. I didn't know how to explain how I felt without coming off as ungrateful. "I'm getting along great here and I feel like I'm doing my job well but its just... why here? Why this job of all places. I would have been just as good off as a worker in the mailroom."
"This is a good opportunity for you. I knew you could do better than a mailroom. I called President Park about you knowing he would pull more than a few strings. He owes me one from a while back. Imagine if I hadn't pulled you out of the situation you were in..."
"Yes, but--"
"But what? Do you not like it? Because I can--"
"No, no, no.", I said quickly. "Its not that. I just don't want to be known as the girl who's only here because of her dad's position."
He laughed again. "Well, that's exactly why you're here, sweetheart. I dont get why you're so worked up over it, but I guess I'll have to pretend to understand." The line sounded muffled and I heard a voice in the background. "Uh, I gotta go. Let me know if you have any problems. I'll call you later." Anyone who knew my father knew that later could last anywhere from two weeks to two months.
"Alright. I will, Dad. Love y--" The line went dead.
I sighed as I turned off the screen and turned to go back inside.
"Aw, calling Daddy? How sweet.", said a voice. There was Jaebum standing in front of the the doorway, drying his hair with a towel.
"That's none of your business.", I said, arms crossed.
"I'm sorry.", his voice dripped with sarcasm. He wore an amuses expression. "I was just checking to see if you were finally making an excuse to run out on us like the others."
