Dan looked emotionlessly in his cold mirror. Even he was scared if how he looked. But Dan didn't want to be talked to. He had nothing to say. He hates gossip and has nothing positive to talk about.

School had never been easy. Dan had never been normal.  Even though he was dressed in black he stood out from everyone. He made his way downstairs and said goodbye to his sister Lauren and kissed her pale cheek.

"Dan... Um... Could you... Plait my hair... Like you used to? Unless if you have to go...  " He and Lauren had never been as close as they were six years ago. They were almost inseparable before... It happened.

Dan knew he should be getting to school but he missed spending time with her.  Plus just thinking of school made him want to be sick. So Dan  nodded "I'd love to. " Dan flashed Lauren a genuine smile.  It's the first time he smiled in years.

He grabbed a hairbrush and some hair ties.  He brushed through Lauren's silky brunette hair and took his time doing two perfect French plaits. As it was time for Lauren to go to school and he was still there he decided to walk her.

They made jokes and laughed and had fun just like they used to.  Dan waved Lauren off and made his way to his school. He was half an hour late. He walked closer and closer to (hopefully) the next few years of his life. "Maybe This year will be different" He whispered  shamefully.

As he got to the front gates of the school he was wondering whether to bail but he knew he couldn't get expelled again. So he opened the rusty gate and made his way to the reception.

"Hello dearie what's your name?" The receptionist looked like a nice enough lady but conversations was never Dan's strong point. "My names Dan Howell." Dan muttered as he plugged in his  earphones.

She looked for Dan's report then her bloodshot eyes widened with anxiety. The lady became strangely intimidated and started to stutter. Th...Th... This w...way Mr Howell. "

Dan couldn't care less what she thought he was judged enough anyway. By everyone.

His first lesson was English. Dan was welcomed with a furious teacher and a terrified class. It seems like nothing has changed. Different school same response.

The teacher sat him at the back of the class next to a smiley black haired boy with a colourful t shirt. The joyful boy turned to Dan and gave him a small but genuine smile.

"Hi there! My name's Phillip Lester. But everyone calls me Phil! And I'm guessing from the fact the teacher called you Dan  that...well...is your name! Welcome to the Harlek school! By the way could I borrow a pencil I left all my pens and pencils at home!" Phil's happiness confused Dan. Phil had a beautiful twinkle of hope in his eye. He had such beautiful  eyes. It reminded him of the stars in the night sky. 'No, stop it' Dan told himself. He wasn't going to even spend a minute of his time thinking of this ray of sunshine.

Dan didn't want to be talked to. He liked it that way. Isolated. Alone. Drowning himself in song lyrics. He enjoyed the  loneliness. He never had to worry about arguments with  friends. Or about being  bullied. Or about relationships. He preferred it that way. But...it's the only way he's ever known.

He handed Phil the pencil. "There now f*ck off." Phil was confused by Dan's annoyance, but it only made him more curious. Phil tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hi! We're supposed to talk about Alice in wonderland with our partners. What do you think the hidden message in the story is ?"

Why was this boy still trying ? Dan thought. "Sorry I didn't make myself clear first time did I ? I said f*ck off!" Dan slammed his fist on the desk. "O...Okay ...um ....sorry for b...bothering you Dan."

Dan didn't mean to be so hostile but he couldn't help it. With everything he's been through. At such a young age. If people knew what he'd been through they wouldn't question his behaviour. But he won't let that  happen. He has no one he could trust. No one to look after him. No one to love, and no one to love him back.

Dan pulled out a brand new sketchbook. It was pitch black. He grabbed a pencil and just drew. Dan never thought about what he drew it was just what he was thinking. Dan drew for the majority of the lesson. His hand and the pencil just seemed to flow across the page. At the end of the lesson he looked at the piece of paper. It was a drawing. It looked like an eye. 'Oh God' Dan thought. It was a drawing of Phil's night sky blue eyes. His beautiful eyes.  Phil started to pack away his stuff and come Dan's way. Dan hesitated and ripped the page from his notebook, scrumpled it up and tossed it in the bin.

After Dan left, Phil couldn't help but pick up the scrumpled paper from the bin. He unfolded the creased paper and saw the drawing. It was of his eyes. Titled Phil Lester. The drawing was so detailed. So beautiful Somehow Dan turned a regular feature on Phil's face into a majestic piece of art. Phil was so confused. Dan was acting so hostile earlier but... Did he secretly have an interest in Phil like Phil has with Dan?
