I created a monster and the monster is me. Monsters are described to the average human as creatures or abominations that evoke fear and misfortune upon others around them. Many would describe the actions soldiers take in combat as monstrous. By joining the military, I place myself in such a position to perform these actions, if forced to. Soldiers are known to be in situations where they must decide between the life of a child, or even an infant, over the life of their brothers and sisters in arms. Every soldier placed in such a position will always choose his fellow soldiers over the enemy. Every soldier has accepted such an outcome and many are unbothered by it as well. This is where they are classified as a monsters.
What separates the necessity of the monster and the true monsters of men are those that embrace it out of need and those that embrace the monster for the thrill. The men who use it solely for the hunt and the kill, they are the true monsters. The monster I have is one embraced out of necessity. I have accepted that in order to protect the ones I love and care for the most, I must take a back seat to my monster and let it control my actions. I lose my sense of remorse, regret, mercy. War and death no longer affects me, no longer scares me. I walk the line of death every day and stare Death down each night when I sleep. Fear becomes a four letter word that has no definition. All emotions that may hinder me are set aside and locked away to allow me to defeat my enemies. I embrace my monster and watch as it acts on my decision, my decision to kill and destroy who and whatever I must in order to return home. My enemy has embraced their monster, but our reasons differ. They have the true monster. My monster is fueled by a stronger motive, the desire to protect the land I love and the people I hold close. That is why my monster will always win. This is the life I have chosen, I have created a monster and that monster is me.
