• Chapter Two •
Alice
***
I was born in the beginning of the spring.
My mom always said,
It was right around the time,
When everything started turning green.
Too bad I have no idea what “green” is.
As soon as the doctor got a chance to examine me,
She noticed there was something off about my eyes.
I wasn’t taking in my surroundings,
And they were glazed off.
After checking into it further,
She informed my Mom and Dad that,
For some unknown reason,
My eyes didn’t form exactly right,
And I was completely blind.
My parents didn’t even bat an eyelash.
As soon as my mom was able to leave the hospital,
They were taking me to every eye doctor in the city,
To enquire about surgeries.
Sometimes they would even drive to nearby towns,
To try their luck out there.
All those countless doctors said no,
There was nothing to be done.
All the miniscule nerve cells were there and intact,
They just weren’t doing their job.
This continued until I was three or four,
And got to the point where,
All I could remember from my early childhood,
Was my mother telling me that this time,
This trip,
They were going to find a way to fix me.
I didn’t understand that,
Not everyone saw the world as nothing but black,
Most people actually saw.
There were colours and shapes and stretches of endless sky on hot summer days.
There were sparkling oceans and sunrises and towering mountains.
There was an Eiffel tower and a Grand Canyon and a Great Wall of China.
And I was missing out on all of it.
So of course I didn’t understand why I needed fixing.
The last place we went was New York.
I remember hearing the shouts of the street vendors and the honking of cars and the music.
But my most vivid memory,
Was the chocolate ice cream that I ate,
And it being,
As I put it,
“The bestest ice cream ever!”
Right after I finished it,
My mom led me by the hand,
Into another cramped and noisy waiting room.
I remember toddling out of the doctor’s office,
The exact same way as I had walked in,
With my mother squeezing my little hand quite tightly in her larger one.
Looking back on it,
That time it was probably more for her comfort,
Than for my own.
After a few minutes of walking silently,
Without warning my mom started crying.
I remember being very scared and asking her repeatedly what was wrong.
But all she could say was,
“I’m sorry baby. I am so, so sorry.”
