"Isn't it beautiful?" She asked, looking at me.
But I said nothing and sat there, smiling, looking up at the beautiful night sky. A dome full of white, red, and blue expanding overhead. Tonight was the first night all year to see the meteor showers.
Earlier, I asked what they were, and why we wouldn't bring umbrellas. She looked at me for a second, then laughed. "Silly," She said in a joyful tone, "It's not rain, it's beauty." As if that were the answer to everything.

A few hours earlier, we arrived ontop of a hill overlooking the Black Lake. I had always wondered why it was called that. The water never seemed to be black, or dark at all for that matter. The water was a shimmering bright blue with sunlight shining off the waves.
Ontop of the hill was a campsite that we went to every summer. It had the best view of the lake and the sprice forest below us.
Once we arrived I started to lift out the bags from the back of the blue Honda minivan. I trudged along the worn dirt road over to the campsite. I spotted a ring of stones that instantly told me where the firepit was. Away from it was the wooden benches with a blue tarp canopy above it.
I set the bags down on the bench and started to walk back to the van. A light breeze blew across my face as I came back to the van.
"Well, come on!" The woman said eagerly as we finished unloading.

A few hours later, the sun had started to set. Through the tall trees, the sunset wasn't too hard to see, but still a challenge. My mom had started to pile up the dried firewood, as it had rained the night before, into a pile.
Excited to start the fire, I ran over to one of the bags inside a tent and pulled out a lighter. I smiled as I jogged back over to the fire pit.
I piled small amounts of twigs and pine needles into the middle of the pit. She walked up right behind me and grinned once she saw what I was doing.
"You ready?" She asked me ajusting her short-cropped brown hair. I stood up and nodded with a wide grin on my face holding up the lighter.
Without a word, she walked over to the short cooler and started to pull out the hotdogs and marshmallows. I turned toward the fire and started to strike the lighter.
After a few tries, a tall warm fire started to appear before our eyes. I walked to the outskirts of camp and picked up a long sturdy stick to roast the marshmallows on.

By the time the fire was hot enough to cook with, stars had started to come out. I turned my head to see her looking up at the appearing stars.
"It's amazing..." She muttered, as if in a trance.
How could it not? I thought to myself as I traced the constallations I knew with my finger. Orion, Virgo, The Dippers, there were so many. The night was clear, not a single cloud in the sky.
I stuffed a marshmallow in my mouth and wondered why there were so many stars. So much light in just the sky, shimmering brightly.
In the fire and moonlight i could see her perfectly. Her baby blue winter coat, jeans fitting just right, dark purple glassses.
But what was most stunning were her eyes. Black like coal in the center with navy blue lines radiating out. Lighter from the inside, darkening on the way out.
Just then, she turned those eyes towards me. "Even when you are older, promise me you will never let me go. Okay?"
I could hear the sadness in her voice. I was worried.
"What's wrong?" I asked, "Is everything okay?"
"Y-yes... of course it is." She muttered, I could tell she was lying. She was never good at it.
"Mom, I-" I said as I was interrupted.
"Just... please... do you still love me?" She asked with complete seriousness in her eyes.
"Yes, of course I do! But why are you even asking this?"
"It's just... It's nothing"
I didn't believe her, but I also didn't want to pressure her. I turned my head back towards the fire and stared at it. A million thoughts flew through my head at once.

The moon had started to rise in the distance as we finished dinner. The last of the sun had set behind the mountains and left behind a dark sky full of light.
I was sitting at the edge of the hill looking at the sky when my mom tapped my shoulder.
"It's getting late." She said thoughtfully. "Tomarrow we have to pack up early."
I sighed reluctantly and stood up. I walked in the direction of our tents and opened my flap. I looked in the direction of her and nodded my head.
"Good night." I said to her.
"You too." She said as she stared up at the stars.
I walked inside the tent and closed the flap behind me. A small electric lamp lit the inside with a warm comforting glow.
I crawled over to my bags and took out a gray T-shirt and a pair of black shorts. I undressed, put on the clean pair of clothes, and went over to my dark blue sleeping bag.
I crawled inside the bag and felt warm and comfortable. I reached over to the jeans I was wearing before and pulled out my phone.
I checked the percentage.
3.
Shoot.
I laid my phone screen down on the floor of the tent. I gave up on the idea of staying awake and ajusted the white fluffy pillow until it was cozy.
I turned over on my back and stared up at the roof of the tent. Nothing could go wrong, right? I asked myself as I closed my eyes. Yeah. Everything will be fine.

I had no idea how wrong I was.
