My knees were trembling so much I thought they were going to give in. My hands were shaking violently which made it extremely difficult to keep the grip on the handle of my suitcase. My heart was beating faster than I think it ever has before in my life. And no matter what, I couldn't turn back, no matter how much I wanted desperately to run from this hell and never come back. I haven't even stepped foot inside yet I'm already on the brink of a panic attack.
"Calm down, Lyric," My mum said in a faked calm voice- it would be hard to detect the annoyed undertone in her words to anybody else, but I've lived with her all my life and I know how she acts around everybody else. Everything she says to me has a second meaning that only I know. "I'm trying." I told her, but I couldn't calm down. I genuinely couldn't suppress the nerves that made my knees weak and were responsible for the tauntingly nauseous feeling in my stomach. I considered telling her that but there would be no point, she didn't care, she never has. All she cares about is how she looks and what everybody else thinks about her. In her own words, I'm just a waste of time in her life. She groaned from frustration and grabbed a tight grip on my wrist, making me grimace. "Come on Lyric, you know you have no choice."
I let out a shaky sigh as she started to drag me into the building in front of me, my suitcase rolling behind me. Inside the building was a reception desk painted white like the rest of the place, with a bored woman typing on her computer behind the desk. There were a few empty, plastic chairs lined up against one of the walls and a table in front of them that had random magazines targeted at middle aged women scattered all over it messily, along with a few crosswords taken out of newspapers that had already been completed.
"Hi, I'm here to drop off Lyric." My mum said to the receptionist. I rolled my eyes, she made it sound as though I was a toddler who had to be dropped off at day care. The receptionist- supposedly named Cathy, judging from her badge- nodded and quickly typed in something before replying, "Take a seat." She nodded her head towards the chairs and I took my seat to the one beside the large windows.
After what felt like forever, 'Cathy' called out my name and both my mum and I walked back over to the desk. "Lyric, I'll show you to your new room. And Mrs. Ambers, you can leave if you'd like," She said with a sickly sweet smile that my mother mirrored back. "Okay. Be good, Lyric. Love you sweetheart," Liar. "Love you mum." Without a second glance she walked back out the door and drove away, leaving me here.
My breaths were still sharp and it still felt like my legs were going to give in, but I'd started calming down. Keyword, started. "This is your room. Due to a lack of space, there's a male in there, despite this being the girls ward- but don't get any ideas. We've got surveillance cameras set up." Great, there's no privacy in this hell either, I thought, but simply smiled back instead. "Also, there's a few rules you'll have to follow, but I'm sure your roommate will tell you about them. Now go, you have a lot of unpacking to do." Cathy ushered me towards the door and I opened it, revealing two beds on either side of the room, one of which had who I assumed was my roommate laying on it. Cathy closed the door behind me and the boy spoke up. "Welcome to the nuthouse, enjoy your stay," He said sarcastically and I let out a breathy laugh. "Thanks." A silence fell between us and I sat down on the vacant bed, my suitcase by my feet. "I'm Ashley," He said and sat up on his bed cross legged, a small smirk playing on his lips. "You are?" "Lyric," I replied, looking down at my shoes. "Well, good luck in this shithole, Lyric," Ashley said. "You're gonna need it."
