Finding Happy

This story was inspired by my long distance relationship with a guy I'd never met before. It lasted around 4 months and then was choppy after that. I wrote this as a tell all only it's dramatized. Names have been changed. This was hard for me to upload as it was only last year. I hope you like it. I dedicate this chapter to Michaela, my good friend, who ironically I have never met before either.

                                                          One

Her weary eyes scanned the room, searching. The club was full of party goers, all eager to hear the latest bands play. As expected, her eyes came to rest by the stage, on a man not much taller than her, his eyes concentrating on the strings of his acoustic guitar. A small group of people surrounding him chatted animatedly. She observed him momentarily, unable to drag her awed gaze away from his admirable figure. This is what she had longed to do; see him in the flesh. And here he was, minutes from going on stage. To sing… about her.

She wisely stayed on the opposite side of the room in case he spotted her, or worse, Andrew did. However her gaze was torn away when a hand rested on her shoulder, causing her to gasp. She turned her head to the side and relaxed her tensed shoulders. It was only Michaela.

A tapping of the mic had everyone’s attention turned towards the stage. The host for this evening welcomed everybody before introducing the first act.

It’s time.

Michaela lead her towards the middle row of seats, near the side, in case a rushed exit was necessary. She was waiting for a certain someone to show up. It kept her on the edge of her seat. This was not a welcomed introduction; there were resentful feelings of intense jealousy. Feelings that would only get in the way of what she’d come here to do.

The first song he performed was a cover of his favourite artist, Glen Hansard. She listened to the huskiness in his voice which was one of the reasons she’d fallen for him so deeply. It made her heart flutter and her palms grow sweaty, although that was nothing compared to some of the audiences reactions to his voice. It was mainly the females whom were all discreetly squealing, captured by his voice. This spiked a pang of resentment towards those women. He was hers. Just hers.

Michaela made an amused sound at the back of her throat. She knew. Or maybe it was the fact that her eyes had narrowed as the girl dug her fingernails into her own thighs and winced. She scowled when she saw him wink at a girl sitting in the front row. Her blood began to boil. It’s all for show. She reminded herself. She took a deep breath and relaxed in her seat. There was movement down the front which is when she spotted Andrew. He was smiling and gave a thumbs up towards the stage as the final line in the song was sung. A cheer erupted as he finished.

“You rock Tad!” a girl next to Andrew called out. Tad grinned back at her and winked.

“Sleaze ball” Michaela muttered disapprovingly. She glared at her which earned a shrug from the unfazed Michaela.

“This next song I’d like to dedicate to the girl I love” her eyes, like daggers, pinned his. There gazes met, and she froze. He’d spotted her. Crap. Panic shot through her and Michaela yanked her arm. She looked down, unaware she had risen from her seat.

“Sit down fool. He can’t see you, the lights are too bright.” She looked back at him uncertain. He started to play the song seemingly unaware she was right here in this room. She listened to the lyrics with fondness. Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink. Michaela scoffed at her.

“Faraway heart come back to me lay your head down to sleep,

Far away heart I want to know where we would go,

For now it’s time to leave.”

The song was beautiful. It was one of the first he’d written about her early on in their relationship. She’d been across the globe, never touched nor met him. Fate had bought them together, and now, her savings did. Michaela had to be persuaded, a trip to Disneyland was now on the agenda.

The song ended and he announced that he had a table set up at the back of the room with merchandise which was there for purchase as of now. She nudged Michaela and they quietly left their seats and went over to the table. It was almost time and she wanted to get something to remember this moment. Her hand rested on a key ring with him and his band members on it. She bought it, as well as a badge, sticker and poster. As she searched for her purse she could see two people approaching. Hesitantly she tilted her face so her hair made a wall between them. The figures stopped by the table, scanning the merchandise. Meanwhile she hurriedly pulled out a $20 note from her wallet.

“Don’t worry, he’ll get over her eventually.” A male voice said reassuringly.

“I hope so. From what I hear, she doesn’t treat him well. Or didn’t.” a female voice replied. She couldn’t bare it then, she glanced up and a look of horror crossed her face. It was her. The one girl she could not bare to hear about let alone see. His ex. And right next to her was Andrew. Michaela had gone to the bathroom so was unable to help distract the two who had just noticed her horrified stare. Andrews smile faded as recognition crossed his face. Now he too was in shock.

“Bianca?” Her breathing stopped as Andrew said her name. She tried feebly to recover her expression. Looking at him directly she replied; “No, Andrea” and quickly grabbed her things before returning to her seat, leaving a confused Andrew and a curious ex behind.

Her underarms were sweating profusely. Michaela re-joined her in her seat and they listened to him play his second last song. The crowd loved him. Michaela made it known that Andrew was watching her from the side, eyes weary. The ex wasn’t in sight thankfully. Suddenly he told people to come closer to the stage, and get out of their seats and sing along if they knew the words. Before she could protest Michaela dragged her right to the front, only a metre between him and her. She couldn’t move. Seeing him up close was even better than from afar. His dark brown hair was brushing against his eyes which were alight with performance buzz. He hadn’t looked her way yet, that was until Andrew called out a certain word which made him stop singing altogether. His eyes widened and I knew this was it. I immediately span around and pushed my way through the crowd towards the exit, Michaela presumably followed. He excused himself on the mic but not before calling my name. I stole a glance backwards and paused. Nearly all eyes were on me. I stared right into his eyes, which burned with intensity. He was making his way towards me. Michaela tried to get my attention but I was stuck to the spot with desire.

“Go! We have to leave, now!” she demanded. People were parting to let him through. She began to panic, quickly turning around, she ran. Ignoring his pleas to stop and talk. They burst through the exit, he was only seconds behind. But they had a pre-organised escape plan. They dove into the car waiting for them by the entrance. The doors were slammed shut, tyres began to skid, meanwhile he ran towards the car. Shouting for her to wait. But it was no use. They sped away into the night. Leaving him standing in the middle of the road confused and hurt to be left like this.

She ignored the vibration of her phone, she knew what was coming. She could feel it. It was easier this way, to run then go to him. It hurt more if they kissed. It was harder for her in the waking hours. They’d have their happy ending someday. Just not right now.
