13 August 2009

It was done. It was out there, probably to the whole fucking town knew with the screams that were raging in the this putrid hell of a house. I was swiftly packing all I could in a bag pack, while my mother tried to tell my father that all I need was a bit more Jesus. That I would return to being one of the perfect Martin siblings once I saw a reverend or went to some type of church camp I would be magically healed. Fuck that. I wish it were that fucking easy.

What do they think this was a vanity choice? Did they think I wanted to be hated and excluded for simply preferring a man over a woman? Did they think I didn't try to be straight? That I refused to believe I was anything but gay? What did they think that this was just some disease? To hell with this, I won't be staying in this hell hole much longer.

I grabbed my bag pack and went back in to the living room. Mom and dad were still arguing and Cindy was just silently watching everything unfold. It hurt seeing her there just watching. Watching my father kick me out and mother trying to convince him all I needed was a bit more Jesus. I held the tears in as I announced I was leaving.

"I'll be getting out of your hair now Austin," I told him. He stood quiet, didn't even look at me. He couldn't let go of his fucking pride for one moment? He didn't even respond to me calling him Austin. Cindy stood, but my father held her back.

"Don't look at the homosexual Cindy, that's not your brother," I starred at him for one moment. So I guess I'm no longer his. I look at Cindy and her face looks so broken that I feel my heart hurt. I don't want to hurt her, but I can't be in this house one second longer. So I walked out, not wanting to hear another word and got in my truck. Cindy had ran to the door frame and watched me as I pulled out. I could almost swear I heard her scream my name as I rounded the end of the street.

I drove around until I decided to go to Ashlyn's house to tell her I was leaving earlier than expected to Chicago.  It was as almost if as I was on autopilot as I drove to her house. I was numb, all I could hear were the name my father had called me, his son. When I got to her house, I decided to text her that I was outside of her huge house. I wanted to prolong this moment as much as I could. I could never be ready to say goodbye to my number one best friend. She had been in my life since the day I shared my ice cream with her in the second grade.

Beau: I'm outside. Told my parents. Come out

Ash: I'll be out in a minute.

Ash came out a few seconds later. I got out and hugged her. Felt her small baby bump as I hugged her. I would miss her and probably the birth of this child. I pulled away from her.

"It was bad so....." I tried to swallow the anger that was trying to rise. Ashlyn looked so broken. She didn't deserve this from me, but I just couldn't be here anymore. I knew with all my heart that Ash would be okay and that her baby was going to be just as amazing as she was. "So I'm just going to head out to Chicago tonight," I tried to tell her in an unexpressive way, but like always she saw through it. I was trying so hard not to cry in front of her. I had promised to be there in the delivery room with her. I had promised to be the best uncle that unborn child could have. I had promised to forever be her best gay friend. I had promised a lot and I had to keep all of them.

"I knew it was probably something like so I'm going to give you this," she started to hand me an envelope, but before I could protest she said, "Beau you'll need it more than me, my parents are so scared of me leaving the house with Tyler, that they're buying me everything I'll need for her. I don't need it." As if she could sense my hesitation she said, "Beau take it as a coming out gift." I grabbed it and pulled her close in a rush. I loved Ash, she was the only person who had ever accepted me for who I was. I needed to leave before I changed my mind.

"I'll miss you Ash, but you just tell me if Tyler tries to mess with you or if you need somewhere to crash if leave this place. I'll still be here for you Ash," I promised her. "I still have to be your best gay friend and that baby's best uncle ever, okay?" I told her in a thick voice.

"I know you will Beau," she told me with tears in her eyes. I hugged her close, trying to say goodbye without saying those stupid words. I let go and rushed to the truck, she and Cindy would be the only reason I would ever come back.

"One day you'll find a guy who will love you and be your biggest supporter, " she yelled through my open window. With that I drove off into something better, hopefully.
