twenty-six // get a grip on yourself

Start from the beginning

Harper opened her mouth to say something, but she was cut off by Caspian darting into the room, his familiar fedora missing off the top of his head. "Um, Chicago, Josh is here to pick you up and Denahi is currently giving him the older brother talk, so you might want to come downstairs before he starts to freak out."

"Hey, Caspian, my dear brother, do you want your hat back?" Hugo teased from down the hall. "Your head looks quite weird without it."

Caspian sighed, turning around and exiting my room. Harper got to her feet. "I would like to meet this Josh fellow, so I hope you don't mind if I follow you."

I didn't say a word as I started out of my room and down the stairs to see Josh and Denahi sitting on the living room couch while Eric sat quietly in the chair. Josh's hair was no longer a faded blue, but instead a vibrant red color, which caught me off guard.

"Guten tag, Joshua," I remarked. "Are you ready to go?"

He smiled. "Whenever you are." He turned towards all my siblings in the room. "It was nice to meet you, Eric and Denahi. And judging that you are the only other female in this household right now, you are Harper."

My older sister nodded. "Yes, I am. It's really nice to meet you, Josh."

Now that all the introductions were over, he climbed to his feet and followed me towards the foyer. "Have her back by midnight!" Denahi called.

"I will!" Josh responded back, holding the front door open for me to step through. Once we were settled in his car, a chuckle escaped my lungs. "Meeting all my siblings at once must have been terrible. I'm sorry."

Josh shrugged his shoulders. "It was really no big deal. Caspian and Hugo were downstairs when I first came in and they paid no mind to me. Denahi was the only one that said anything and most of it was just the rules of taking you out on a date." He turned his head towards me. "Was he that way with Garrett?"

Josh's question was based out of curiosity, but it still made me sad. "He didn't get the opportunity to talk with Garrett. We kept our relationship secret for a year or so, but after we had sex for the first time, Garrett didn't want to hide from my family anymore."

"How did your family react to that bombshell?" he asked pulling out of my driveway.

"Hugo, Caspian, and Micah had already known about it for awhile and they were okay with it. The rest of my family was shocked that I picked Garrett Thomas to go out with out of every boy that was interested in me. Overall, they didn't like him, but they didn't protest."

Josh grinned. "I can imagine that their opinions changed when they figured out that you had sex with him."

I shook my head. "The day that happened Garrett had to volunteer with his junior class, shoveling pea gravel at the local park and his parents were out of town on a business trip, so before he took me home, we stopped by his house  for him to take a shower and one thing lead to another and you get what happened. We never told his family or mine, but they pretty much guessed it by the way we acted around one another."

"Well, have they guessed it about us yet?"

His bluntness caught me off guard and I stayed silent for a moments, trying to figure out what to say in response. "Hugo knows because I told him and Caspian might know because Hugo tells him everything, but other than that, we are good. However, Hugo did call me a whore before he started giving me advice on the situation."

Josh raised his eyebrows. "He called you a whore, huh? Nice relationship you have there."

I rolled my eyes. "Believe me, I know."

"Well, you're going to be away from them  for three hours or so tonight, so I hope you have fun with me."

"You weren't really impressed by the movie, were you?" Josh asked as I took one last drink of my Sprite before throwing it into the trash can in front of me.

"I wouldn't say it was bad exactly," I began. "More like absolutely terrible."

Josh grinned, showing off his white teeth. "I thought you liked Batman though. You were pumped for this movie and now you say it sucks."

I crossed my arms over my chest as we made our way out of the theater. "Okay, the world hyped it up like it was going to be fantastic and I went in there and watched it, only to be absolutely disappointed in the entire movie. Sorry if I'm a bit upset over it."

Josh clicked his keychain, unlocking his car as he headed over to the driver's side. I pulled open the passenger door and climbed in as Josh did the same.

"So was this date all you hoped it would be?" He asked, turning his head to look at me.

Overall, the date was perfect. Nothing went wrong and he was a gentleman the entire time. He even paid for my drink and movie ticket. The moment the movie started we ended up breaking down in a fit of laughter because someone spilled their popcorn in front of us. We received death glares from multiple people afterwards.

It was strange actually. I felt so at ease around Josh even after the previous events that happened between us the last time we were alone. He was so easy to talk to and laugh with and he definitely wasn't the judgmental type, considering the fact that this date only happened because I didn't understand my feelings for him.

I smiled. "The date was pretty good, but I wish the movie was better."

Josh laughed. "Well, I'm sorry about that. There's nothing I can do. You'll just have to live with the fact that a Batman movie actually sucked."

I rolled my eyes. "Leave me alone, Joshua."

"I will after I ask you this one question," he responded. "And I want a serious answer, okay?"

"Okay?"

"Did this date help you figure out your feelings at all?"

Josh's eyes didn't leave mine as I thought about his question. Did I really like him in that way? Was I willing to have him a shot?

I took a deep breath. "I'm willing to give us a shot if you are, Joshua."

His eyes widened at the words that left my mouth, but he nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I'm willing to be in a relationship with you. I am so willing."

I laughed, pulling my hair out of its ponytail. "Your eagerness is quite funny to me."

Josh playfully punched me in the arm before pulling out of the movie theater parking lot. I reached forward to turn up the radio that was currently playing Blink-182's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. Stay Together For the Kids was the song currently playing and I couldn't help but think of my parents.

"Hey, Chicago?"

"Yes, Joshua?"

"You realize now that we're technically dating we could be in the Honey, I'm Good music video?"
