"Well, I broke up with Garrett ten minutes ago." I watched as Hugo's eyes almost popped out of his head, but he kept quiet, letting me finish my statement. "I broke up with him because I think I have feelings for Josh which developed after I did... y'know with him."
An over dramatic sigh left his body as he rubbed his eyes. "Oh no, my sister is turning into a whore."
I groaned, pulling the comforter back over my face. "Hey, hey, don't go into hiding, I was just kidding. However, once a whore, you're nothing more."
"I'm firing you as my therapist," I remarked as he pulled the blankets away from my face once again.
He grinned. "You love me, you know you do." The grin left his face as he realized that I actually needed advice. "I don't know what to tell you though, Chicago honestly. Follow your heart is one option. If you are losing that spark with Garrett and you think that spark will reappear with Josh, then go for it. Your happiness is the most important thing to both me and you."
"But what if I want to be with both of them?"
"Chicago, I'm pretty sure that's illegal."
"Hugo Joseph Beaumont, I'm serious! What if I love them both? What if I can't pick just one of them?"
My brother sighed. "Do I look like the love expert?"
"Hugo..."
"Fine, how bout this? If you really loved Garrett, you wouldn't have fallen for Josh. If you really, truthfully, loved him, you wouldn't be falling for someone else right now."
I couldn't deny that my brother had a point, a very brilliant point. Sometimes I forgot that he was considered a genius.
"Hugo?"
"Yes?"
"I love you."
•••
When Hugo and I made our way down to dinner that night, my dad decided to drop the bombshell that he wanted us to spend some more time together, so he was going to pick me up from school today. The last time I actually talked to my dad was when him and I blew up on each other. Ever since then, I had been trying to avoid him, not just because of the fight, but because of what I found in his study. The withdrawal slip was still buried at the very bottom of my closet where no one would dare look.
Surprisingly, I was a bit excited that my dad wanted to pick me up because he hardly ever did, even when I was little, but the moment I walked outside of school I knew something was wrong. My father's silver audi was nowhere in sight and he was never late to anything.
I was also sad to see that all my other siblings were already gone and neither Aiden nor Garrett had came to school today, which I didn't know if that was a good or a bad thing. However, I hadn't been contacted which meant that Garrett was still breathing.
Sadly, I was still technically grounded, so I didn't have my cell phone on me to call anyone for a ride. I turned my head to look across the whole parking lot and I knew fate hated me the moment my eyes fell upon Joshua Dun who was walking to his car. Today, I had once again skipped sociology which meant I hadn't talked to him since Saturday night. I didn't want to break that streak today, but there was no way in hell I was going to walk all the way home.
"Hey, Joshua?" I called, jogging towards his red vehicle. "Can you give me a ride?"
His head darted up at the sound of my voice and he seemed a bit taken back that I was actually talking to him, but he nodded anyway, gesturing for me to climb into the passenger seat. I breathed a sigh of relief as I finally reached the car, pulling open the door and climbing inside.
The blue-haired boy climbed into the driver's seat beside me and started the car, quickly pulling out of the parking lot and heading in the direction of my house.
"I'm sorry I had to ask you for a ride," I mumbled. "My dad ditched me and I didn't feel like walking home."
Josh stayed silent, not saying a word, but I knew he was listening. I just didn't want him to think that I was avoiding him because I was angry. That wasn't the case at all. It was the complete opposite.
I took a deep breath.
"I broke up with Garrett," I blurted out, causing Josh to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane. Other cars automatically began honking and I swore Josh couldn't get back in his lane fast enough. His hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. "You did what?"
"I told Garrett that we needed to take a break," I repeated, running my hands through my hair, wishing I had a hair tie on me.
"Does he want to punch me in the face now?" The blue-haired boy asked. "Because the last time I saw you was over a week ago when you fell asleep in my bed and then I had to find out from my brother that he drove you home."
He hit the steering wheel with his hand, angry apparent in his features. "Did you really regret what happened so much that you didn't even bother to wake me up and maybe explain what you were feeling? You missed a full week of school, Chicago."
"Josh," I said, softly, "I didn't miss school to avoid you because I regretted what happened between us."
"Then why were you gone?" He turned his head for a split second to face me. "And do not tell me that it was family issues. I've heard that excuse so many times. It's unoriginal."
I found the thought of other girls avoiding Josh to be quite funny, but the only excuse they could come up with was family issues? At least one of them had to be more creative than that.
"I was gone because I was trying to figure some things out, Joshua," I explained. "I realized that I may actually have some feelings towards you which isn't good, considering that Garrett depends on me so much. I didn't want to break up with him, but it wouldn't be fair if I stayed."
"So," he began, "you've decided that you might actually return my feelings?"
I nodded. "Yes, and I couldn't figure out for sure while I was still with Garrett."
"How do you exactly plan to figure it out?"
"Well, Joshua," I took a deep breath. "Would you like go on a date with me? If you forgive me that is."
It was like Josh stopped breathing for a moment, the only sound in the car being my own breathing. We turned onto my street and I could hear Josh swallow slightly. "I'll pick you up at eight Saturday night."
I smiled, lifting my head up to see a two unfamiliar cars parked in my driveway. The scary part was one was a police car. "Oh my God," I whispered, Josh's car coming to a abrupt stop right in front of my house.
"Chicago, what's going on?" He asked, concern filling his voice.
"I think I know why my dad didn't show up," I mumbled, quickly unbuckling my seat belt, climbing out of the car, and darting up my porch.
"Chicago, wait!"
I ignored Josh and shoved open my front door, heading straight for the living room where I heard voices. The sight that greeted me made my eyes widened.
My father being put in handcuffs by a man in uniform.
"Quentin Beaumont, you are under arrest for the embezzlement of $500,000. You have a right to an attorney."
A/N: This story only has six more parts left! However, after this over and Avenir is closer to ending, I plan on publishing a Tyler short story, a Pete Wentz story, and quite possible a Green Day story? Would any of you read that if I published it?
Also, which one of Chicago's brothers is your favorite? It's for science.
