" but the price of freedom is high. it always has been. and it's a price i'm willing to pay. "
WASHINGTON D.C.
Stella Simon did not run. She was slow, and could only sprint for a handful of seconds at a time. The adrenaline coursing through her veins as she ran for her life still did not make her fast. But she was clever and her brain was quick.
She didn't know the men in the dark suits with their even darker weapons. She had been working at her small donut shop when a whole group of them walked in and sat in a booth by the back wall. She could feel their eyes on her back as she bent down and grabbed the desired pastries for the customers. They exchanged words in hushed tones and declined ordering anything when they were asked.
She excused herself to a fellow coworker, claiming she felt ill as she retreated to the back and hung up her apron. She grabbed her purse and broke out of the back door, running down the street once she heard the pounding of the many footsteps in pursuit.
She turned quickly into an alley and pushed herself up against the brick wall, willing her body to camouflage.
The men turned into the alley and took slow, cautious steps. They continued talking in their hushed tones as Stella held her breath.
One of the men stood directly in front of her, and she willed her heart to stop beating so loudly.
"Anything?" she heard one of them say.
"No," the man in front of her replied.
The group of four men continued to walk around the alley until a figure jumped down from the fire escape. The person continued to fight the men hand to hand, and they were winning. The figure dropped the last body with a sickening crack over their knee.
"You can come out now," the voice was feminine. "I won't hurt you."
Stella released the breath she had been holding and willed her body to change back to it's fleshy tone. She made eye contact with the red head who had basically saved her life.
The woman smiled as Stella slid down the wall, breathing heavily.
"Hello Stella, we've been looking for you."
